Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Select, grade, and prepare raw tonewoods, meticulously evaluating grain, density, and acoustic potential to ensure the highest quality materials for each instrument.
Precisely join, carve, and shape guitar bodies and necks using a combination of hand tools, power tools, and CNC machinery, following exact design specifications.
Perform intricate fretwork, including seating, leveling, crowning, and polishing frets to guarantee flawless intonation and exceptional playability.
Hand-carve and shape critical components such as nuts and saddles from bone or synthetic materials for optimal string action and tone transfer.
Execute complex structural repairs on customer instruments, including neck resets, bridge re-gluing, crack repairs, and headstock restorations with seamless cosmetic integration.
Apply a variety of high-end finishing techniques, such as nitrocellulose lacquer, polyurethane, or oil finishes, managing every step from sealing and spraying to color-sanding and buffing.
Perform detailed inlay work using materials like mother-of-pearl and abalone for fretboards, headstocks, and rosettes, ensuring clean lines and a perfect fit.
Install, wire, and troubleshoot complex electronic components in electric guitars, including pickups, potentiometers, switches, and jacks, ensuring clean soldering and quiet operation.
Conduct comprehensive final setups on all newly built and repaired instruments, adjusting truss rods, setting string height (action), and perfecting intonation.
Operate and maintain a wide range of specialized woodworking equipment, including band saws, table saws, jointers, planers, and sanding machines, adhering to strict safety protocols.
Bind guitar bodies and fretboards with wood or plastic binding, ensuring tight, clean seams and perfectly mitered corners.
Utilize specialized jigs and fixtures to accurately assemble guitar bodies, attach necks, and glue bridges, ensuring correct geometry and structural integrity.
Collaborate with the design team to develop and prototype new models, providing critical feedback on construction methods and material performance.
Perform detailed quality control inspections at various stages of the build process to identify and rectify any imperfections in materials or craftsmanship.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workshop environment, contributing to a culture of excellence and professionalism.
Accurately document all repair work, custom build specifications, and material usage for internal records and customer communication.
Interface directly with clients in the custom shop to translate their desired specifications and aesthetic preferences into a tangible instrument build plan.
Stay current with emerging lutherie techniques, tools, and materials through continuous learning and participation in industry workshops or forums.
Manage inventory of raw materials, parts, and hardware, placing orders as needed to prevent production delays.
