As our Guitar Polisher, you will be the crucial final step in the guitar finishing process. Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute multi-stage buffing and polishing operations on guitar bodies and necks using stationary buffing wheels and handheld polishers to achieve a mirror-like, high-gloss finish.
  • Meticulously wet-sand and dry-sand various clear coats, including nitrocellulose lacquer and polyurethane, to level the surface and remove imperfections like orange peel, runs, and dust.
  • Systematically work through a progression of fine-grit sandpapers and polishing compounds to eliminate all sanding marks and swirl marks.
  • Operate and perform daily maintenance on buffing machinery, ensuring buffing wheels are clean, properly dressed, and loaded with the correct compound for each stage.

  • Inspect each instrument under specialized, high-intensity lighting to identify and meticulously correct any surface flaws, haze, or blemishes before final assembly.
  • Handle delicate and high-value instruments with the utmost care throughout the entire process to prevent scratches, dents, or other damage.
  • Develop a deep understanding of how different finish types (nitrocellulose, polyester, polyurethane) react to various sanding and buffing techniques.
  • Mask and protect sensitive areas of the instrument, such as binding, fretboards, and open cavities, before beginning the sanding and buffing process.
  • Perform final cleaning and detailing of the entire instrument post-polishing, ensuring all compound residue is removed from crevices, hardware, and the fretboard.
  • Consistently meet daily and weekly production targets while maintaining the highest possible standards of quality and craftsmanship.
  • Use and maintain a variety of hand tools, power tools, and specialized jigs to securely hold and manipulate guitar parts during the finishing process.
  • Perform final quality control inspection on the finish, signing off on the instrument's cosmetic readiness for the final assembly department.
  • Scuff-sand and de-nib finishes between coats as part of the overall finishing workflow to ensure a flawless foundation for the final polishing.
  • Precisely execute spot repairs and touch-ups, including drop-fills and localized sanding, to correct minor blemishes discovered late in the process.
  • Document all work performed on traveller sheets or in a digital tracking system to ensure process consistency and traceability.

Secondary Functions

  • Collaborate with the spray and paint department to provide feedback on finish application, helping to diagnose and resolve recurring issues.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment, strictly adhering to all safety protocols, especially regarding dust collection and the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Actively participate in the company's continuous improvement initiatives, suggesting new techniques, tools, or process changes to enhance quality and efficiency.
  • Assist in the training and mentoring of new technicians or apprentices, sharing knowledge of best practices for sanding, buffing, and safety.
  • Communicate effectively with the assembly and setup teams regarding the status of instruments and any specific handling requirements.
  • Contribute to a positive team environment by demonstrating a strong work ethic, a commitment to quality, and a passion for creating beautiful instruments.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proven expertise in operating stationary buffing arbors and variable-speed handheld polishers for high-gloss finishing.
  • Mastery of wet-sanding and dry-sanding techniques by hand to achieve a perfectly flat and smooth surface ready for polishing.
  • Deep knowledge of various guitar finishes (especially nitrocellulose lacquer and polyurethane) and their unique working properties.
  • Ability to expertly identify and correct a wide range of surface defects, such as orange peel, fish eyes, sanding scratches, and buffing swirls.
  • Proficiency in selecting and applying the correct sequence of cutting, polishing, and finishing compounds to achieve a flawless shine.
  • Experience using precision hand tools for masking, cleaning, and detailing intricate areas of an instrument.
  • Understanding of workplace safety, including the proper use of respirators, safety glasses, and dust extraction systems.
  • Ability to perform basic maintenance and dressing of buffing wheels and other related equipment.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate or diploma from a recognized lutherie school or a vocational program in woodworking, finishing, or auto body repair.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 2+ years of professional, hands-on experience in a high-gloss finishing role.

Preferred:

  • Direct experience polishing guitars or other high-end musical instruments in a production or custom shop environment is strongly preferred. Candidates with significant experience in high-end automotive/marine finishing, fine furniture restoration, or jewelry polishing will also be strongly considered. A personal passion for guitars is a major plus.
