Are you the go-to person for all things guitar? We're on the hunt for an enthusiastic and deeply knowledgeable Guitar Specialist to be the face and hands of our guitar department. Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Deliver a world-class, engaging customer experience by actively listening to customer needs and providing tailored product recommendations for guitars, basses, amplifiers, and effects pedals.
  • Demonstrate a comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of major guitar and accessory brands, including their history, tonal characteristics, and ideal applications.
  • Perform high-quality technical services, including professional setups, intonation adjustments, truss rod adjustments, and action settings to meet customer specifications.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot a wide range of electronic issues, performing skilled repairs such as pickup installations, wiring modifications, and component replacements.
  • Execute detailed fretwork, including fret leveling, crowning, and polishing to eliminate buzzing and improve playability, and perform full or partial refrets when necessary.
  • Confidently assess and appraise used instruments and gear for trade-in or consignment, accurately determining market value and condition.
  • Skillfully restring a variety of stringed instruments, educating customers on string types and proper maintenance techniques.
  • Drive sales to meet and exceed individual and department targets, utilizing product knowledge and relationship-building to close sales effectively.
  • Provide clear, accurate, and timely communication to customers regarding the status of their repairs, including detailed cost estimates and completion timelines.
  • Maintain an expert-level understanding of the distinctions between acoustic, electric, and bass guitars, as well as various amplifier and effects pedal technologies.
  • Address and resolve customer issues and complaints with professionalism and empathy, ensuring a positive resolution and customer retention.
  • Educate customers on instrument care and maintenance, empowering them to properly care for their purchases and build long-term trust.
  • Conduct structural repairs on acoustic and electric instruments, such as crack sealing, bridge reglues, and headstock break repairs.
  • Manage the entire repair service workflow, from initial intake and ticketing to final quality control checks and customer pickup.
  • Actively participate in product training sessions and stay current with new product releases, industry news, and emerging musical trends.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in maintaining the visual presentation and merchandising of the guitar department, ensuring products are clean, well-organized, and attractively displayed.
  • Support inventory management by assisting with cycle counts, receiving new products, and ensuring accurate stock levels in the point-of-sale system.
  • Participate in and provide expert support for in-store events, workshops, and product clinics to drive community engagement and sales.
  • Create engaging digital content (short videos, photos, written tips) about products and repairs for the store's social media channels.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate of completion from a recognized luthier or instrument repair program (e.g., Galloup School, Roberto-Venn, MI).
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a related discipline.

Relevant Fields of Study:

  • Music Performance or Music Business
  • Luthiery / Woodworking

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 2-5 years of combined experience in a music retail environment and/or a professional instrument repair shop.

Preferred: Direct, hands-on experience as a guitar technician or luthier, coupled with a proven track record in a customer-facing sales role within the music products industry. A personal history as a performing or recording musician is highly valued.
