Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Guiding customers through the selection process for firearms, ammunition, and accessories by providing detailed, expert-level information on product features, benefits, and applications.
  • Executing the sale of firearms with absolute precision, including the accurate and compliant completion of all required federal and state documentation, such as the ATF Form 4473.
  • Initiating and carefully interpreting the results of the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) for all applicable firearm transactions.
  • Upholding an uncompromising standard of adherence to all local, state, and federal laws, as well as company policies and ATF regulations governing the sale and handling of firearms.
  • Delivering an exceptional, legendary customer service experience by building genuine rapport, actively listening to customer needs, and providing honest, expert advice.
  • Meticulously maintaining the firearm inventory, which includes conducting regular cycle counts and ensuring the complete accuracy of the electronic Acquisition & Disposition (A&D) records.
  • Responsibly receiving and processing incoming firearm shipments, which involves verifying serial numbers against shipping manifests and securely logging them into the store's inventory system.
  • Serving as the go-to subject matter expert on a wide range of firearms, optics, and related products, confidently answering complex customer questions and correcting misinformation.
  • Ensuring the entire gun library, including display cases and countertops, is impeccably clean, well-organized, and merchandised according to company standards to create a safe and inviting environment.
  • Performing basic gunsmithing services as a value-add for the customer, such as scope mounting, laser bore-sighting, and fitting firearms with accessories.
  • Vigilantly following all loss prevention and security protocols to safeguard company assets, with a particular focus on the high-value and sensitive firearm inventory.
  • Evaluating and processing customer firearm trades and consignments by thoroughly assessing condition, determining fair market value, and completing all associated legal and store paperwork.
  • Proactively staying informed about new products, emerging industry trends, and crucial changes in firearm legislation to maintain a high level of expertise and provide current information to customers.
  • Professionally resolving any customer issues or complaints related to firearms purchases or services, ensuring a positive outcome that maintains customer loyalty.
  • Demonstrating and enforcing safe firearm handling practices at all times, both for oneself and for customers, setting a constant example of safety and responsibility.
  • Actively promoting store loyalty programs, extended service plans, and related products like gun safes and cleaning kits to enhance the customer's purchase and drive sales.
  • Efficiently and accurately processing all customer transactions using the store's point-of-sale (POS) system for sales, returns, and special orders.
  • Communicating inventory needs, out-of-stocks, and specific customer requests for non-stocked products to the department manager or inventory planning team.
  • Accurately tagging, labeling, and pricing all new firearms and related merchandise as it arrives and is placed onto the sales floor or into the vault.
  • Assisting customers with special orders for firearms and other items not currently in stock, and following through on the process until the customer takes delivery.

Secondary Functions

  • Supporting adjacent departments, such as Hunting or Camping, during peak business hours or when staffing levels require additional coverage.
  • Participating in general store upkeep, including recovery, restocking shelves, and ensuring the overall cleanliness and presentation of the sales floor.
  • Engaging in all required company training, safety meetings, and product knowledge seminars to continuously improve skills and performance.
  • Assisting in the execution of in-store events, sales promotions, and workshops related to firearms and shooting sports.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • ATF 4473 & Compliance: Deep, practical knowledge of how to correctly complete, review, and file ATF Form 4473 and maintain A&D records.
  • Firearms Product Knowledge: Extensive knowledge of various firearm types (pistol, rifle, shotgun), actions, brands, calibers, and their appropriate uses.
  • POS Systems: Proficiency in using retail Point of Sale (POS) systems to process transactions, manage returns, and look up inventory.
  • NICS Process: Understanding of how to navigate the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) and interpret the responses (Proceed, Delay, Deny).
  • Basic Gunsmithing: Competency in mounting and bore-sighting scopes, attaching accessories, and performing basic firearm cleaning and maintenance.
  • Inventory Control: Experience with inventory management principles, including cycle counting and variance reconciliation.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age and able to legally possess a firearm.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 1-3 years of experience in a customer-facing role.
