Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate various types of application guns, including HVLP, airless, conventional, and electrostatic systems, to apply uniform coatings, paints, or adhesives onto a wide range of surfaces and components.
  • Meticulously prepare surfaces for application, which includes cleaning, degreasing, sanding, grinding, and masking, to ensure optimal adhesion and a flawless finish.
  • Accurately mix paints, primers, epoxies, and other coating materials according to precise formulas, technical data sheets, and production specifications.
  • Calibrate and adjust equipment settings, such as fluid pressure, air pressure, and fan pattern, to control paint flow and achieve the required film thickness and texture.
  • Conduct thorough visual inspections of finished parts to identify and correct defects like runs, sags, orange peel, fisheyes, or inconsistent coverage.
  • Perform skilled touch-ups and rework on finished products to ensure they meet stringent quality assurance benchmarks before moving to the next stage of production.
  • Interpret and work from blueprints, work orders, and technical specifications to understand the finishing requirements for each specific job.
  • Systematically clean and maintain all application equipment, including guns, pots, hoses, and nozzles, to ensure consistent performance and prevent costly downtime.
  • Adhere strictly to all company and industry safety protocols, including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as respirators, safety glasses, and protective suits.
  • Manage the curing process by monitoring oven temperatures and bake times to ensure coatings are properly hardened and durable.
  • Document production and quality control data accurately, tracking material usage, completed units, and any identified non-conformances.
  • Apply powder coating materials using electrostatic guns, ensuring complete and even coverage on complex metal parts and assemblies.
  • Operate and monitor automated robotic painting systems, making adjustments as needed to maintain production flow and quality standards.
  • Select and change out appropriate gun tips, nozzles, and needles based on the specific material viscosity and application requirements.
  • Efficiently manage workflow to meet demanding production schedules and deadlines without compromising the quality of the work.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in the inventory management of paints, solvents, powders, and other consumable supplies, reporting low stock levels to the supervisor.
  • Participate actively in continuous improvement programs and lean manufacturing initiatives aimed at enhancing process efficiency, reducing waste, and improving safety.
  • Provide hands-on training and mentorship to new or junior operators on proper equipment operation, surface preparation, and safety procedures.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in compliance with 5S principles and company housekeeping standards.
  • Collaborate with the quality control department to troubleshoot recurring finishing issues and help implement effective corrective actions.
  • Perform basic preventative maintenance and troubleshooting on spray booths, curing ovens, and related production machinery.

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Spray Gun Operation: Demonstrated proficiency with various industrial spray systems (HVLP, airless, electrostatic, powder coating).
  • Paint & Material Mixing: Strong ability to accurately mix paints, catalysts, and reducers to exact specifications and perform color matching.
  • Surface Preparation: Expertise in sanding, masking, chemical washing, and other surface preparation techniques for various substrates (metal, plastic, wood).
  • Blueprint Reading: Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, work orders, and manufacturing process sheets.
  • Quality Inspection: Keen eye for identifying subtle defects in coatings and finishes, with knowledge of common paint-related issues.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Skill in disassembling, cleaning, troubleshooting, and performing routine maintenance on application guns and related equipment.
  • Material Knowledge: Understanding of different types of industrial coatings (e.g., epoxies, urethanes, enamels, powders) and their application properties.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 1-3 years of direct experience as a spray painter, powder coater, or industrial gun operator in a manufacturing or production setting.

Preferred: 3+ years of experience in a high-volume industrial environment with a proven track record of producing high-quality finishes. Experience with robotic painting systems is a significant plus.
