Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Assist the lead operator in the precise assembly, preparation, and quality control checks of perforating guns and associated downhole hardware according to detailed job schematics and operational procedures.
  • Safely handle, transport, and load explosive charges, detonators, and initiators into perforating gun carriers, strictly adhering to all company, client, and federal (ATF) regulations.
  • Perform comprehensive pre-job and post-job function checks, maintenance, and cleaning of all perforating equipment, wireline tools, and associated surface equipment to ensure operational readiness and safety.
  • Meticulously maintain an accurate and up-to-date inventory of all explosives, components, and hardware, completing required logs and documentation for regulatory compliance and accountability.
  • Actively participate in the rig-up and rig-down of wireline pressure control equipment (lubricators, BOPs, grease injectors) on the wellhead, ensuring all connections are secure and pressure-tested.
  • Operate ancillary equipment such as cranes, forklifts, and winches under direct supervision to safely lift, move, and position heavy equipment and tool strings on the well site.
  • Provide hands-on support to the lead operator during the deployment and retrieval of the tool string, monitoring surface equipment and communicating any anomalies or issues immediately.
  • Ensure the worksite, including the wireline unit, gun loading area, and tool racks, is kept clean, organized, and free of hazards before, during, and after job execution.
  • Accurately and legibly complete all required field documentation, including job safety analyses (JSAs), work tickets, equipment checklists, and post-job reports for submission to the supervisor.
  • Engage proactively in all pre-job safety meetings, toolbox talks, and operational briefings, contributing to hazard identification and the development of mitigation strategies.
  • Assist in troubleshooting operational and equipment-related issues in the field, applying mechanical knowledge to help diagnose problems and implement effective solutions quickly.
  • Drive company vehicles, including heavy-duty trucks which may require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL), to and from well site locations, often in remote areas and varying road conditions.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of downhole wellbore schematics and job programs to anticipate operational steps and prepare necessary equipment in advance.
  • Maintain and care for all assigned personal protective equipment (PPE), ensuring it is in good condition and used correctly at all times on the job site.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with the crew, company man, and other on-site personnel to ensure seamless and safe operational workflow.

Secondary Functions

  • Support the re-dressing and repair of perforating guns and associated hardware in the district shop, preparing them for future jobs.
  • Assist with routine maintenance and inspections of the wireline truck and unit, including fluid checks, tire inspections, and basic mechanical upkeep.
  • Participate in company-mandated safety drills, emergency response training, and competency development programs.
  • Contribute to a positive and collaborative team environment by demonstrating a strong work ethic, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to teamwork.
  • Support ad-hoc operational requests and assist other service lines on location as directed by the field supervisor.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Mechanical Aptitude: Strong ability to work with hands and tools for assembling, disassembling, maintaining, and troubleshooting complex mechanical equipment.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Knowledge of or ability to quickly learn and adhere to strict ATF, DOT, and HSE regulations concerning the handling of explosives and hazardous materials.
  • CDL with Endorsements: Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License (Class A or B), often with Hazmat and Air Brake endorsements, is frequently required.
  • Equipment Operation: Basic proficiency in operating light industrial equipment such as forklifts, cranes, and winches.
  • Basic Computer Literacy: Ability to use basic software for completing digital forms, logs, and required company training.
  • Physical Strength & Stamina: The capacity to repeatedly lift and move heavy objects (50-75 lbs) and work long hours in physically demanding conditions.
  • Explosives Handling: Prior experience or the ability to be trained in the safe handling and documentation of explosive materials.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's Degree or certificate from a vocational or technical college.

  • Electronics or Industrial Maintenance

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 0-2 years of experience in a related field. This is an entry-level position with extensive on-the-job training provided.

Preferred:

  • Prior experience in the oil and gas industry, particularly in a physically demanding role (e.g., roustabout, floorhand).
  • Previous work in a mechanical, construction, or military (EOD, ordnance) role is highly advantageous.
  • Must be able to pass a comprehensive background check as required by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to handle explosive materials.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record and be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and physical.
