Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive fitness assessments and consultations for new and existing members to evaluate their health, physical condition, and fitness objectives.
  • Design, develop, and implement safe, effective, and highly personalized exercise programs tailored to individual client needs, goals, and limitations.
  • Provide one-on-one personal training sessions, demonstrating proper form and technique for a wide range of exercises to maximize results and prevent injury.
  • Lead engaging, high-energy, and inclusive group fitness classes, adapting routines and intensity levels to accommodate participants of varying abilities.
  • Actively supervise the gym floor, offering assistance, spotting, and exercise modifications to members to ensure a safe and supportive workout atmosphere.
  • Build and maintain strong, positive relationships with members to foster a sense of community, enhance client retention, and drive member referrals.
  • Educate clients on fundamental principles of health, nutrition, and lifestyle habits to complement their fitness regimens and promote holistic well-being.
  • Monitor client progress through regular check-ins, reassessments, and performance tracking, adjusting workout plans as needed to overcome plateaus and achieve goals.
  • Proactively engage with members on the gym floor to provide encouragement, answer questions, and offer impromptu fitness advice and support.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe fitness environment by regularly inspecting equipment, reporting any malfunctions, and ensuring all areas meet hygiene standards.
  • Promote and sell personal training packages, group class passes, and other fitness services to help members invest in their health and achieve their goals.
  • Stay current with the latest fitness industry trends, research, exercise techniques, and nutritional science to provide state-of-the-art coaching.
  • Handle member inquiries and concerns with professionalism and empathy, providing excellent customer service to ensure a positive member experience.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential client records, including health history, fitness assessments, workout logs, and session schedules.
  • Demonstrate a positive and energetic attitude at all times, serving as a role model for a healthy and active lifestyle to inspire members.
  • Ensure all members are adhering to gym policies and procedures to maintain a respectful and safe environment for everyone.
  • Instruct members on how to safely and effectively operate all types of cardiovascular and strength-training equipment.
  • Assist in developing and leading gym-wide fitness challenges, workshops, and educational seminars to drive member engagement and excitement.
  • Collaborate with the broader gym staff, including front desk and management, to create a seamless and integrated member experience.
  • Manage your schedule effectively, including booking client appointments, managing cancellations, and ensuring punctuality for all sessions and classes.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in planning and promoting gym events, open houses, and fitness workshops to attract new prospects and engage the community.
  • Contribute to the gym's social media channels by creating and appearing in content such as workout demonstrations, fitness tips, or member success stories.
  • Provide front desk support during peak or off-peak hours as needed, including member check-ins, answering phones, and handling general inquiries.
  • Participate in community outreach initiatives and corporate wellness events to represent the gym and promote its services.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Nationally Recognized Personal Training Certification: Active certification from an accredited organization (e.g., NASM, ACE, ACSM, NCSA).
  • CPR/AED and First Aid Certification: Current and valid certification is mandatory.
  • Knowledge of Human Anatomy & Kinesiology: Deep understanding of how the body moves and functions.
  • Exercise Program Design: Proven ability to create customized, progressive, and goal-oriented workout plans.
  • Fitness Assessment Techniques: Skill in conducting body composition analysis, movement screens, and strength/cardio testing.
  • Equipment Proficiency: Expertise in the safe and effective use of a wide variety of free weights, resistance machines, and cardio equipment.
  • Group Instruction: Ability to lead and command a group setting, providing clear cues and modifications.
  • Nutritional Principles: Foundational knowledge of nutrition and dietary guidelines to support client goals.
  • Injury Prevention & Modification: Ability to identify movement dysfunctions and adapt exercises for clients with injuries or limitations.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Current, nationally accredited Personal Training Certification.
  • Current CPR/AED Certification.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
  • Additional specialty certifications (e.g., Corrective Exercise, Strength and Conditioning, Senior Fitness).

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 1-3+ years of demonstrated experience in a personal training or group fitness instruction role.

Preferred:

  • Experience in a customer-facing role involving sales or service.
