Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute comprehensive preventative maintenance schedules for a wide range of cardiovascular and strength training equipment, including treadmills, ellipticals, stationary bikes, and weight machines, to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
  • Skillfully diagnose complex mechanical, electrical, and electronic issues in malfunctioning fitness equipment, utilizing diagnostic tools, multimeters, and technical manuals to identify root causes.
  • Manage the end-to-end process of assembling and installing new state-of-the-art fitness equipment according to manufacturer specifications and safety standards, ensuring it is perfectly calibrated and ready for member use.
  • Diligently maintain accurate and detailed service records, work orders, and maintenance logs for all equipment, utilizing a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to track service history and parts usage.
  • Proactively manage and maintain an organized inventory of spare parts, tools, and supplies, forecasting needs and ordering new components to minimize equipment downtime.
  • Conduct thorough and regular safety inspections of all gym equipment and facility areas to identify potential hazards and ensure unwavering compliance with all safety regulations and brand standards.
  • Respond with urgency to service calls and work orders submitted by gym staff and management, prioritizing repairs to minimize disruption to member experience and facility operations.
  • Provide clear and consistent communication to gym management regarding equipment status, repair timelines, cost estimates, and data-driven recommendations for equipment replacement or upgrades.
  • Undertake the refurbishment and rebuilding of older or worn fitness equipment, replacing key components like decks, belts, cables, and upholstery to extend its useful life and maximize the facility's investment.
  • Perform precise calibration of electronic components on fitness equipment, such as console displays, speed sensors, and heart rate monitors, to ensure accurate readings and functionality.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact and liaise with third-party service providers and equipment manufacturers for warranty claims, specialized repairs, and advanced technical support.
  • Develop and deliver training sessions for gym staff on proper daily cleaning procedures, basic troubleshooting techniques, and how to identify and report equipment issues effectively.
  • Assist in the development and management of the annual budget for equipment maintenance, repairs, and parts purchasing, ensuring cost-effective operations and providing input on capital expenditures.
  • Stay current with the latest advancements in fitness equipment technology, connectivity, industry trends, and repair techniques through continuous professional development and manufacturer training.
  • Provide support for general facility maintenance tasks, including minor plumbing, electrical, and cosmetic repairs, to ensure the entire gym environment is safe, presentable, and welcoming.
  • Safely and efficiently move, reposition, and re-install heavy fitness equipment on the gym floor to accommodate layout redesigns, deep cleaning schedules, or special events.
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of the entire equipment fleet to evaluate its condition, operational efficiency, and life expectancy, providing detailed reports to inform strategic replacement plans.
  • Execute all repairs and maintenance with a high level of craftsmanship, ensuring the finished work is not only functional but also maintains the premium aesthetic and brand standards of the fitness center.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair issues with the facility's audio/visual systems, including mounted televisions, overhead speakers, and personal viewing screens on cardio machines.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and commitment by responding to occasional emergency repair situations outside of standard working hours to resolve critical equipment failures and ensure the club is fully operational for members.

Secondary Functions

  • Contribute to the facility's capital expenditure planning for equipment replacement.
  • Collaborate with the management team to optimize gym floor layout and equipment placement.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced Mechanical & Electronic Diagnostics: Proven ability to troubleshoot and repair complex systems in both strength and cardio equipment.
  • Fitness Brand Proficiency: In-depth, hands-on experience with major fitness equipment brands (e.g., Life Fitness, Precor, Technogym, Cybex, Matrix).
  • Technical Manual & Schematic Interpretation: Ability to read and accurately interpret service manuals, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
  • Inventory Management: Skill in managing a parts inventory, tracking usage, and processing orders via a CMMS or similar software.
  • Tool & Diagnostic Equipment Proficiency: Expert-level use of hand tools, power tools, and electronic diagnostic equipment like multimeters.
  • General Facility Maintenance: Competency in performing minor plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and cosmetic repairs within the facility.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's Degree or certification from a technical/vocational school.

Relevant Fields of Study:

  • Electronics Repair Technology
  • Mechanical Engineering Technology
  • Small Engine or Automotive Repair

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 2-5 years of experience in a technical maintenance or repair role.

Preferred:

  • 2+ years of direct experience as a fitness equipment technician for a commercial gym, hotel, university, or equipment manufacturer is highly preferred.
  • Manufacturer-specific service certifications (e.g., Life Fitness, Precor Certified Technician) are a significant advantage.
  • Experience working with a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) is strongly desired.
