Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Actively assist Certified Personal Trainers during one-on-one and small group training sessions by preparing, setting up, and breaking down necessary equipment.
  • Provide spotting assistance to clients during weightlifting exercises, ensuring their safety and reinforcing the trainer's instructions on proper form.
  • Demonstrate correct exercise techniques and movements to members as directed by a personal trainer or as part of general floor supervision.
  • Proactively engage with members on the fitness floor, offering friendly encouragement, answering general fitness questions, and building a positive rapport.
  • Conduct new member orientations and basic fitness consultations, explaining how to use cardio and strength equipment safely and effectively.
  • Monitor the gym floor to ensure members are adhering to gym policies and safety protocols, correcting improper form or unsafe equipment use in a polite and educational manner.
  • Serve as a first point of contact for member inquiries or concerns on the fitness floor, escalating issues to a trainer or manager when necessary.
  • Assist in conducting initial fitness assessments, such as measuring body composition, flexibility, and cardiovascular endurance, under the supervision of a certified trainer.
  • Maintain a high level of energy and a visible presence on the gym floor to ensure members feel supported and have access to immediate assistance.
  • Help manage the flow of training sessions in busy periods, ensuring equipment is available and the space is organized for both trainers and general members.
  • Reinforce the value of personal training services by sharing success stories and information about programs with interested members.
  • Learn and shadow various training styles and methodologies from senior trainers to build personal knowledge and professional skills.

Secondary Functions

  • Perform daily and weekly cleaning and maintenance checks on all fitness equipment, including cardio machines, strength-training apparatus, and free weights, reporting any malfunctions promptly.
  • Ensure the gym floor, weight racks, and functional training areas are kept tidy, organized, and free of clutter by re-racking weights and returning equipment to designated storage.
  • Manage inventory of fitness accessories like resistance bands, foam rollers, and yoga mats, notifying management when supplies are low or need replacement.
  • Provide basic administrative support to the personal training department, such as helping to schedule appointments, make follow-up calls to clients, or prepare client folders.
  • Participate actively in team meetings, professional development workshops, and continuing education sessions to stay current with fitness industry trends.
  • Support the sales and marketing team by promoting gym challenges, workshops, and special events to members on the floor.
  • Assist in setting up and tearing down for group fitness classes or special gym events, ensuring a smooth transition between activities.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Foundational Knowledge of Exercise Science: A solid understanding of basic human anatomy, kinesiology, and the principles of cardiovascular and strength training.
  • Proper Exercise Technique: Ability to demonstrate and explain a wide range of common exercises with correct form and safety cues.
  • Fitness Equipment Proficiency: In-depth knowledge of how to operate, adjust, and perform basic maintenance on various types of cardio and strength-training equipment.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • A recognized Personal Training Certification (e.g., ACE, NASM, ACSM, NSCA) or plans to obtain one.
