Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop, implement, and lead dynamic and engaging gymnastics classes for various age groups and skill levels, from toddlers to advanced competitive teams.
  • Create and execute progressive, age-appropriate lesson plans that align with established curriculum standards (e.g., USA Gymnastics levels) and promote skill acquisition in a safe and structured manner.
  • Provide expert, individualized instruction and constructive feedback to each gymnast, focusing on proper technique, form, and execution across all apparatuses (floor, vault, bars, beam).
  • Ensure the highest standards of safety are maintained at all times by conducting regular equipment inspections, enforcing gym rules, and being proficient in spotting techniques for a wide range of skills.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and motivating team environment that encourages sportsmanship, discipline, personal growth, and a genuine love for the sport.
  • Assess, track, and document gymnast progress through skill charts, performance evaluations, and direct feedback, communicating achievements and areas for improvement to both athletes and their parents/guardians.
  • Choreograph and refine compelling routines for individual gymnasts and groups for recreational showcases, exhibitions, and competitive meets.
  • Provide hands-on coaching support at local, regional, and national competitions, managing meet logistics, athlete warm-ups, and in-competition performance strategies.
  • Design and lead targeted conditioning, strength, and flexibility training sessions tailored to the developmental needs and goals of gymnasts.
  • Implement effective class management strategies to handle groups of children with varying energy levels and abilities, ensuring a productive and fun learning atmosphere.
  • Serve as a positive and influential role model for gymnasts, demonstrating integrity, a strong work ethic, resilience, and a passion for athletic excellence.
  • Educate athletes on the core principles of sports nutrition, effective injury prevention strategies, and mental preparedness to support their holistic development.

Secondary Functions

  • Collaborate effectively with fellow coaches and program directors to plan class schedules, coordinate student placements, and contribute to the overall growth and success of the gymnastics program.
  • Maintain clear, consistent, and professional communication with parents regarding their child's progress, class information, upcoming events, and any behavioral or safety concerns.
  • Participate actively in ongoing professional development opportunities, including workshops, certifications, and clinics, to stay current with the latest coaching techniques, judging criteria, and safety protocols.
  • Administer basic first aid and respond swiftly and effectively to injuries in accordance with facility policies and established emergency action plans.
  • Assist in the daily setup and breakdown of gymnastics equipment before and after classes, ensuring a clean, organized, and safe training environment for all.
  • Manage class attendance records, student registrations, and other essential administrative tasks as required by the program director.
  • Contribute to the planning and enthusiastic execution of special events, such as summer camps, parent's night out, birthday parties, and open gym sessions.
  • Mentor junior coaches and volunteers, providing guidance on coaching techniques, spotting, and class management.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • USA Gymnastics (USAG) Certification: Current Safety/Risk Management certification is essential; Instructor or higher-level certifications are highly desirable.
  • Advanced Spotting Techniques: Proven ability to safely and effectively spot a wide range of developmental and high-level gymnastics skills.
  • Skill Progression Planning: Deep understanding of how to break down complex skills into manageable steps for athletes at different levels.
  • Routine Choreography: Creative ability to design engaging and level-appropriate routines for floor and beam.
  • First Aid & CPR/AED Certification: Current certification is mandatory.
  • Apparatus Expertise: In-depth technical knowledge of all standard gymnastics apparatuses, including vault, uneven bars, balance beam, and floor exercise.
  • Strength and Conditioning Programming: Ability to design and implement effective physical preparedness programs for gymnasts.
  • Meet & Competition Strategy: Experience in preparing athletes for the competitive environment and managing meet day logistics.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university or college.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

2-5+ years of demonstrated experience in coaching gymnastics to a variety of ages and skill levels.

Preferred:

  • Experience coaching competitive USAG, Xcel, or other recognized gymnastics programs.
  • A personal background as a competitive gymnast.
  • Verifiable experience in a lead or head coach capacity.
