Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Guide, train, and empower diverse groups of skilled and unskilled volunteers, as well as future homeowners, in all aspects of residential construction, ensuring a positive, safe, and educational experience on the worksite.
  • Oversee the complete lifecycle of a residential building project, from site preparation and foundation work through to framing, roofing, interior finishing, and final landscaping touches.
  • Proactively enforce and model all site safety protocols and OSHA standards, conducting regular safety briefings and correcting any hazards to maintain a zero-incident work environment for all staff and volunteers.
  • Interpret and execute complex construction plans, blueprints, and specifications with precision, ensuring all work is performed to code and meets the organization's high-quality standards.
  • Coordinate the timely ordering, delivery, and secure storage of all construction materials, and diligently manage the inventory, maintenance, and proper use of tools and equipment.
  • Liaise with and schedule professional subcontractors, such as electricians, plumbers, and HVAC technicians, overseeing their work to ensure it integrates seamlessly with the project timeline and quality benchmarks.
  • Develop and meticulously maintain the project construction schedule, creatively adapting to weather delays, volunteer availability, and unforeseen challenges to keep the project on track for its dedication date.
  • Perform continuous quality control checks at every stage of the building process, ensuring high standards of workmanship and adherence to building codes and organizational quality guidelines.
  • Serve as the primary on-site point of contact, fostering clear, consistent, and respectful communication with volunteers, partner families, staff, subcontractors, and community partners.
  • Demonstrate exceptional on-the-spot problem-solving skills to effectively address construction challenges, material shortages, or personnel issues as they arise, minimizing project delays.
  • Act as a patient and effective teacher, breaking down complex construction tasks into manageable steps for individuals with no prior building experience, fostering confidence and skill development.
  • Cultivate a welcoming, inclusive, and collaborative atmosphere on the worksite that encourages teamwork, mutual respect, and a shared sense of purpose among all participants.
  • Manage all site logistics, including waste management and recycling, portable facility maintenance, and ensuring the site is left clean, organized, and secure at the end of each workday.
  • Maintain accurate and timely project documentation, including daily work logs, progress reports, volunteer sign-in sheets, and any necessary incident reports.
  • Coordinate and facilitate all required municipal and third-party inspections, preparing the site and ensuring the project successfully passes at each critical stage of construction.
  • Act as a professional and enthusiastic ambassador for the organization, clearly articulating its mission and impact to volunteers, donors, media, and the wider community.
  • Safely and skillfully operate various types of construction tools and light machinery, from basic hand and power tools to equipment like skid-steers or forklifts as required.
  • Lead engaging morning kick-off meetings to set daily goals, assign tasks, review safety procedures, and motivate the volunteer crew for a productive and meaningful day.
  • Meticulously manage and complete the final punch list items in coordination with the homeowner and staff, ensuring the home is 100% complete and ready for the partner family.
  • Assist the Construction Manager in monitoring on-site expenses and adhering to the project budget, particularly concerning materials, tool rentals, and subcontractor costs.

Secondary Functions

  • Collaborate with the volunteer department by providing feedback and compelling stories from the build site that can be used in recruitment, recognition, and retention efforts.
  • Participate in community outreach and fundraising events as a representative of the construction team, sharing firsthand accounts of the organization's impact.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of building plans, construction processes, and safety protocols by providing practical, field-level feedback and suggestions.
  • Support the homeowner services team by participating in homebuyer education classes, particularly those focused on home maintenance and repair.
