Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Greet clients with a warm, welcoming attitude, escorting them to the styling station and offering refreshments to begin their salon experience on a positive note.
  • Conduct thorough and relaxing hair shampooing, conditioning treatments, and scalp massages tailored to the client's hair type and the service they are receiving.

  • Engage professionally with clients during their appointment, maintaining pleasant conversation and ensuring their comfort, especially during processing times.
  • Observe senior stylists' cutting, coloring, and styling techniques with a keen eye to absorb knowledge and refine personal skills for future growth.
  • Assist with the final styling touches under the direct supervision of a licensed stylist, such as flat-ironing or curling, to complete the client's look.
  • Educate clients on recommended take-home hair care products, explaining their benefits and how to use them to maintain their style, thereby supporting salon retail goals.
  • Manage the draping and undraping of clients, ensuring their clothing is fully protected with appropriate capes and towels for all services.
  • Apply hair glosses, toners, and specialized deep conditioning treatments as directed by the stylist, ensuring even application and proper timing.
  • Manage appointment flow by promptly cleaning and preparing a stylist's station for their next client, ensuring a smooth transition.
  • Proactively check on clients during color processing or treatment times, offering magazines or more refreshments and communicating their status to the stylist.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain impeccable cleanliness and organization throughout the entire salon, including sweeping up hair clippings, wiping down stations, and sanitizing surfaces between appointments.
  • Manage and stock the shampoo and back bar area, ensuring all professional products are clean, full, and readily accessible for stylists.
  • Oversee salon laundry duties, which includes washing, drying, and folding a constant supply of clean towels, robes, and capes.
  • Monitor, organize, and restock the salon's retail shelves, making sure products are attractively displayed, dusted, and front-facing.
  • Diligently clean and sterilize all tools and equipment, such as combs, brushes, and clips, in accordance with state board cosmetology regulations and salon health standards.
  • Provide backup support to the front desk team during busy periods, which may include answering phone calls, scheduling appointments, or processing client payments.
  • Prepare and organize color carts and tool trollies for the stylists' scheduled day, ensuring all necessary supplies are ready for their upcoming appointments.
  • Contribute to opening and closing procedures for the salon, following a checklist to ensure the space is secure and ready for business.

Required Skills & Competencies

  • Shampoo & Treatment Application: Proficiency in a variety of shampooing, conditioning, and scalp massage techniques suited for different hair types and textures.
  • Color Formulation & Application: Basic knowledge of hair color theory and the ability to accurately mix and assist in the application of color, lightener, and toner.
  • Blow-Drying Basics: Competence in performing basic blow-dries and rough-dries to prepare hair for styling.
  • Sanitation and Safety Protocols: A thorough understanding of and strict adherence to state board sanitation, disinfection, and safety standards.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

High School Diploma or GED. Must be currently enrolled in an accredited Cosmetology program or be a recent graduate.

Preferred Education:

Possession of a valid State Cosmetology License or a temporary work permit/apprenticeship license.

Relevant Fields of Study:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

0-2 years of experience within a customer service or salon environment.

Preferred:

Previous experience as a salon receptionist or shampoo technician is highly valued. A portfolio of work from cosmetology school (e.g., photos of cuts, color, and styles) is a strong plus.
