Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Assist senior stylists with all aspects of the hair styling process, including precise sectioning of hair, applying color and treatments, and preparing clients for services.
  • Perform professional and relaxing shampoo, conditioning, and scalp massage services, customizing product selection based on client hair type and specific needs.
  • Master blow-drying and basic finishing techniques using a variety of tools and methods to prepare clients for final styling by the senior stylist.
  • Accurately mix hair color formulas, toners, and lighteners as directed by senior stylists, ensuring precise measurements and consistency for predictable results.
  • Maintain a comprehensive and current knowledge of the salon's service menu and product lines to effectively answer client questions and provide educated recommendations.
  • Prepare and organize the stylist's station before each appointment, ensuring all tools, products, and equipment are sanitized, stocked, and readily available.
  • Provide basic hair treatments, such as deep conditioning masks, protein treatments, and glosses, under the supervision of a licensed stylist.
  • Actively observe and learn advanced cutting, coloring, and styling techniques from senior team members to continuously develop personal skill sets and industry knowledge.
  • Manage time effectively to support multiple stylists simultaneously in a fast-paced environment without compromising the quality of service or the client experience.
  • Drape and gown clients properly and professionally, ensuring their complete comfort and the protection of their clothing throughout the duration of their service.
  • Meticulously rinse color, highlights, and chemical treatments from clients' hair with precision and care, ensuring all product is thoroughly removed.
  • Keep detailed and confidential notes on client services, formulas, and personal preferences within the salon's client management system to ensure a personalized future experience.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain the highest standards of salon cleanliness and sanitation, including diligently sweeping floors, sanitizing stations, tools, and shampoo bowls between each client.
  • Manage salon laundry operations, ensuring a constant and ample supply of clean towels, capes, and robes for both clients and staff.
  • Greet clients upon arrival with a warm and professional demeanor, offering beverages and ensuring they are comfortable while they wait for their appointment.
  • Provide support to the front desk team by assisting with answering phones, booking appointments, and processing client payments during peak business hours.
  • Diligently monitor and restock inventory of professional hair care products on the retail floor and back bar supplies, notifying management of low stock levels to prevent shortages.
  • Actively promote and sell retail products by educating clients on the features and benefits of the items used during their service to help them maintain their look at home.
  • Uphold the salon's premium brand image and positive culture by maintaining a professional appearance, a polished demeanor, and a team-oriented attitude at all times.
  • Participate enthusiastically in team meetings, internal training sessions, and external educational workshops to stay current with industry trends and enhance technical abilities.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficiency in professional shampooing, conditioning, and scalp massage techniques.
  • Foundational knowledge of hair color theory and application (mixing, single-process application, foil placement).
  • Competence in blow-drying and heat styling with various tools (round brushes, flat irons, curling wands).
  • Thorough understanding of proper sanitation and sterilization procedures for all salon tools and equipment, in full compliance with state board regulations.
  • Familiarity with a range of professional hair care product lines and their specific uses and benefits.
  • Ability to perform basic hair treatments, such as deep conditioning masks and glosses, with confidence and precision.
  • Basic understanding of client consultation and hair analysis.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED. Must be currently enrolled in or a recent graduate of an accredited Cosmetology program.

Preferred Education:

  • State Cosmetology License or in the final stages of obtaining licensure.

Relevant Fields of Study:

  • Cosmetology
  • Barbering

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 0 - 2 years of experience in a salon or customer-facing environment.

Preferred:

  • Previous experience as a salon assistant or salon receptionist is a strong plus. A portfolio of work (even from cosmetology school) is highly encouraged.
