Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Meticulously set and justify lines of metal or wood type by hand using a composing stick to create text blocks for various print projects.
Operate and maintain a variety of letterpress printing presses, such as Vandercook, Chandler & Price, or Heidelberg Windmill, ensuring optimal performance and print quality.
Lock up type forms securely in a chase using furniture, quoins, and other locking elements to prepare for multi-color and single-pass press runs.
Make precise on-press adjustments, including roller height, ink density, packing, and impression settings, to achieve crisp, high-quality impressions.
Carefully mix custom ink colors by hand to match specific Pantone Matching System (PMS) values or client-provided color swatches.
Pull proofs and conduct rigorous proofreading for typographical errors, spacing issues (kerning, leading), and overall design accuracy before final production.
Distribute used type, leading, and spacing material back into its correct case and location, demonstrating a strong command of the California Job Case layout.
Precisely cut paper stock to required dimensions using a guillotine cutter, ensuring accuracy, squareness, and minimal waste.
Perform a range of finishing and bindery tasks, including scoring, folding, perforating, die-cutting, and assembling printed materials to complete projects.
Collaborate closely with designers, artists, and clients to translate digital designs into tangible letterpress prints, providing expert advice on typefaces, layout, and paper selection.
Manage, organize, and catalog the studio's collection of metal and wood type, ensuring all fonts are properly sorted and accessible.
Maintain a detailed inventory of paper stock, inks, solvents, and other consumable print shop supplies, initiating orders as necessary.
Perform routine cleaning and preventative maintenance on printing presses, type cases, and other studio equipment to ensure longevity and a safe working environment.
Troubleshoot and resolve common printing issues on the fly, such as uneven inking, poor impression, ghosting, and registration problems.
Adhere to all shop safety protocols, including proper handling of chemicals, use of machine guards, and maintaining a clean and organized workspace.
