Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Accurately fold printed sheets, brochures, and flyers using a variety of folding techniques (half fold, tri-fold, Z-fold, gate fold, accordion, cross fold) by hand or on hand folder/hand-fed folding machines to meet finished product specifications and client tolerances.
  • Set up, adjust, and calibrate hand folders, buckle folders, and small folding machines, including guides, rollers, plates, stops, and fold plates to achieve consistent, repeatable fold quality.
  • Inspect incoming printed sheets and materials for alignment, print registration, stock defects, or pre-press issues and report non-conforming material to the supervisor before folding begins.
  • Collate, match, and sequence multiple parts together (inserts, signatures, covers) and verify correct pagination and order prior to folding and binding steps.
  • Perform manual assembly and gluing of cartons, folders, and envelopes using glue guns, rollers, or adhesive tapes according to work orders and quality standards, ensuring accurate glue placement and bond strength.
  • Maintain accurate production counts, lot numbers, run sheets, and quality check records; complete daily logs and timecards in accordance with company procedures.
  • Conduct visual and tactile quality control checks on finished folds for wrinkles, cracks, mis-folds, gussets, broken fibers, and inconsistent creases; remove and document defective units and advise supervisors on corrective actions.
  • Meet or exceed daily and shift production targets while maintaining strict adherence to quality standards, minimizing waste, and maximizing line efficiency.
  • Read and follow production work orders, job tickets, folding diagrams, and sample parts to ensure conformity to customer specifications and setup instructions.
  • Use hand tools and basic mechanical adjustments to perform minor maintenance, replace wear parts (blades, belts, rollers), and troubleshoot folding issues to reduce downtime and maintain continuous production flow.
  • Coordinate with press operators, bindery staff, and shipping/receiving to manage workflow, prioritize rush jobs, and sequence jobs for optimal throughput.
  • Perform precise measurements with rulers, squares, and calipers to verify fold dimensions, margins, and finished sizes before packaging and shipping.
  • Package, count, and label finished products according to packing lists, ensuring correct quantities, protective packaging, and clear labeling for downstream handling or shipping.
  • Maintain strict housekeeping and 5S standards at the work station, including cleanup of paper dust, adhesives, and scrap to support safety and quality.
  • Follow all safety procedures and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements, including lockout/tagout when performing maintenance or changing major components on folding equipment.
  • Train and mentor junior bindery staff and temporary labor on folding techniques, machine setup, quality standards, and safe work practices.
  • Adjust production pace and folding methods to accommodate different stock weights (coated, uncoated, kraft, corrugated) and thicknesses while preventing cracking or fiber splitting.
  • Support changeover processes between jobs by organizing materials, setting up new tooling, and verifying samples before full production runs.
  • Document and escalate recurring quality issues, machine faults, or supply problems to supervisors and participate in root-cause analysis and corrective action plans.
  • Collaborate with quality assurance to conduct random inspections and rework cycles, ensuring that customer rejects are minimized and corrective actions are implemented.
  • Operate and monitor manual scoring, perforating, and creasing tools as needed to improve folding accuracy and reduce tear or tear-outs in heavy stocks.
  • Apply continuous improvement suggestions by recommending process changes, tooling modifications, or workstation layout improvements to increase yield and reduce cycle time.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with inventory management of folding materials, adhesives, blades, and consumables; notify purchasing when supplies reach reorder levels.
  • Support prepress and press teams by preparing and staging printed sheets in the correct sequence and orientation for immediate folding.
  • Participate in departmental improvement initiatives such as waste reduction, cycle time analysis, and training documentation updates.
  • Help with packing and palletizing finished goods for shipping during peak periods and support cross-training initiatives across finishing operations.
  • Provide feedback to production planners about realistic lead times, setup durations, and capacity constraints to improve scheduling accuracy.
