Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Skillfully operate manual screen printing presses, such as carousel or rotary presses, to produce high-quality prints on garments and other substrates.
Precisely prepare and coat screens with photo-sensitive emulsion, ensuring a smooth, even layer for optimal stencil creation.
Expose prepared screens with artwork using a UV light exposure unit, meticulously managing timing and positioning to create a sharp, detailed stencil.
Accurately mix plastisol, water-based, and discharge inks to match specific Pantone (PMS) color codes or custom client swatches.
Execute complex multi-color print job setups, carefully registering each screen to ensure perfect alignment and color-to-color registration.
Conduct initial test prints (strike-offs) to verify print quality, color accuracy, and registration before committing to a full production run.
Load and unload garments or other materials onto press platens, ensuring each item is smooth, straight, and correctly positioned for printing.
Maintain consistent print quality throughout the entire production run by monitoring ink viscosity, squeegee pressure, and off-contact distance.
Properly cure printed items using a conveyor dryer or heat press, calibrating temperature and belt speed to ensure the ink is fully set and durable.
Perform rigorous in-process and final quality control checks, identifying and rectifying any misprints, smudges, pinholes, or other defects.
Efficiently reclaim used screens by removing all ink and emulsion, using appropriate chemicals and pressure washing techniques to prepare them for reuse.
Maintain a deep understanding of different fabric types, blends, and other substrates, and know how they will interact with various ink systems.
Troubleshoot and resolve common printing issues on the fly, such as ink bleeding, fibrillation, or registration shifts, to minimize waste and downtime.
Keep meticulous records of ink formulas, job settings, production quantities, and any special considerations for repeat orders.
Set up, operate, and troubleshoot specialty printing techniques, including the application of foils, flock, glitter, and high-density or puff inks.

Secondary Functions

Maintain a clean, safe, and highly organized workspace, including the press area, ink kitchen, screen room, and drying stations.
Perform routine preventative maintenance and minor repairs on printing presses, exposure units, and drying equipment to ensure peak performance.
Manage and track inventory levels for essential supplies like inks, emulsions, chemicals, and screens, alerting management when reordering is necessary.
Carefully catch, count, fold, and package finished products according to job ticket specifications, ensuring orders are complete and presentable.
Collaborate effectively with the pre-press and design teams to review artwork for printability and provide constructive technical feedback.
Adhere strictly to all workplace health and safety protocols, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling chemicals.
Assist in training and mentoring new print assistants or apprentices, sharing knowledge of best practices and safety procedures.
Contribute to production scheduling and workflow planning to help meet tight deadlines and manage shop capacity effectively.
