Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conceptualize and develop original design ideas for new handicraft products and collections, translating mood boards and market trends into tangible concepts.
  • Create detailed sketches, drawings, and technical specifications for each product, outlining dimensions, materials, and construction techniques.
  • Select and source high-quality raw materials, components, and supplies, negotiating with vendors and suppliers to ensure both quality and cost-effectiveness.
  • Develop and refine prototypes and samples, meticulously working through the design process to solve practical and aesthetic challenges before full production.
  • Execute the final production of handcrafted items, employing expert-level skills in the chosen craft (e.g., weaving, pottery, jewelry making, woodworking).
  • Maintain rigorous quality control standards throughout the entire production process, ensuring each finished piece meets brand and customer expectations for excellence.
  • Research and stay current with emerging design trends, new materials, and innovative crafting techniques to ensure product lines remain fresh and competitive.
  • Collaborate with marketing and sales teams to provide product information, stories, and context that can be used in promotional materials and campaigns.
  • Manage project timelines and production schedules to ensure that collections and custom orders are completed on time and within budget.
  • Document the entire design and creation process, maintaining a detailed archive of patterns, material lists, and production notes for future reference and replication.
  • Experiment with different colors, textures, and material combinations to push creative boundaries and develop a unique brand signature.
  • Create one-of-a-kind bespoke pieces and custom orders based on specific client requests, managing communication and expectations from concept to delivery.
  • Conduct market research to understand consumer preferences, identify gaps in the market, and analyze competitor product offerings.
  • Prepare products for sale, which includes finishing, cleaning, polishing, and creating professional, on-brand packaging.
  • Operate and maintain specialized tools and equipment within the studio, ensuring they are in safe and effective working order.
  • Develop and adhere to sustainable and ethical crafting practices, from material sourcing to waste reduction in the production process.
  • Provide detailed cost analysis for new products, calculating material costs, labor time, and overhead to determine appropriate pricing.
  • Participate in design reviews and critique sessions, providing constructive feedback to peers and incorporating feedback into one's own work.
  • Train and mentor junior artisans or apprentices, passing on technical skills and knowledge of studio processes.
  • Adapt existing designs for different markets or product tiers, creating variations in size, color, or material to broaden the product line's appeal.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain the organization, cleanliness, and safety of the design studio and workshop space.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Expert proficiency in at least one primary craft discipline (e.g., metalsmithing, ceramics, textile weaving, leatherworking, woodworking).
  • Strong sketching, illustration, and technical drawing abilities, both by hand and digitally.
  • Proficiency in the Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) for creating design mockups and marketing materials.
  • Experience with prototyping and sample making to test and refine designs.
  • Deep knowledge of raw materials, their properties, and their applications in the chosen craft.
  • Skill in operating and maintaining specialized craft tools and machinery (e.g., kiln, loom, soldering torch, lathe).
