Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Spearhead the conceptual and detailed design of a wide range of marine structures, including piers, wharves, jetties, breakwaters, quay walls, and mooring dolphins, ensuring they meet operational demands and safety standards.
  • Conduct comprehensive site investigations and feasibility studies for proposed port expansions, new terminal developments, and waterfront revitalization projects.
  • Perform detailed structural analysis and modeling for new and existing marine infrastructure, considering loads from vessels, cranes, cargo, and harsh environmental forces like waves and currents.
  • Develop and manage comprehensive maintenance and rehabilitation programs for existing port assets through regular condition assessments, underwater inspections, and structural evaluations.
  • Prepare detailed technical specifications, construction drawings, and bid documents for marine construction projects, ensuring clarity and precision for contractors.
  • Act as the lead technical authority on-site during construction, providing oversight to ensure work is completed in strict accordance with design plans, quality standards, and safety regulations.
  • Manage complex dredging and land reclamation projects, including planning dredge footprints, calculating volumes, and overseeing environmental compliance and material disposal.
  • Perform coastal engineering analysis, including wave transformation studies, sediment transport modeling, and hydrodynamic assessments to inform resilient design and operational planning.
  • Oversee geotechnical investigations, interpreting soil and seabed data to inform the design of stable foundations for heavy marine structures and crane rails.
  • Prepare and submit the necessary documentation for environmental permits and regulatory approvals from local, state, and federal agencies.
  • Review and approve contractor submittals, shop drawings, technical queries (RFIs), and method statements to ensure alignment with project requirements.
  • Develop accurate project cost estimates and construction schedules, and actively track progress, budgets, and resource allocation throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Liaise effectively with a diverse group of stakeholders including port authorities, shipping lines, terminal operators, contractors, and regulatory bodies.
  • Author in-depth technical reports, design basis memoranda, and presentations to communicate complex engineering concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis related to port performance and asset condition.
  • Contribute to the organization's long-term data strategy and asset management roadmap by providing engineering insights.
  • Collaborate with business units and operations teams to translate their functional needs and challenges into tangible engineering requirements and solutions.
  • Participate in sprint planning, project review meetings, and other agile ceremonies within the engineering and project management teams.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers, designers, and interns, fostering the next generation of maritime engineering talent.
  • Stay abreast of the latest advancements in maritime engineering, including new materials, construction techniques, and international design standards (e.g., PIANC, BS 6349).
  • Assist in business development efforts by providing technical input for proposals and participating in client presentations.
  • Conduct hydrographic survey data analysis to support navigation channel design, maintenance dredging, and berthing operations.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Structural Analysis & Design Software: High proficiency in structural engineering software such as STAAD.Pro, SAP2000, RISA-3D, or similar for analyzing complex marine structures.
  • CAD & Civil Design Software: Expertise in using AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and/or MicroStation for producing detailed construction drawings and site plans.
  • Coastal Modeling Software: Working knowledge of coastal and hydrodynamic modeling tools like MIKE 21, Delft3D, or ADCIRC is highly advantageous.
  • Geotechnical Knowledge: Strong understanding of soil mechanics, marine geotechnical investigations, and foundation design, particularly for piles, caissons, and gravity-based structures.
  • Marine Design Standards: In-depth familiarity with international codes and guidelines for maritime structures, such as PIANC, British Standard 6349, Eurocodes, and ASCE Coasts, Oceans, Ports, and Rivers Institute (COPRI) standards.
  • Construction & Project Management: Proven ability in contract administration, construction oversight, cost estimating, and project scheduling for large-scale infrastructure projects.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

A Master of Science (M.S.) in Civil Engineering with a specialization in Coastal, Ocean, or Port Engineering is highly preferred. A Professional Engineer (P.E.) license is often required for senior roles and is a significant advantage.
