Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct in-depth performance analysis, benchmarking, and stress testing of server, storage, and networking hardware to establish performance baselines and ensure they meet engineering specifications.
  • Evaluate emerging hardware technologies and market trends to provide strategic recommendations for technology roadmap development and future infrastructure investments.
  • Develop and execute detailed test plans, scripts, and methodologies for qualifying new hardware components, platforms, and vendor solutions for our production environments.
  • Perform root cause analysis (RCA) on complex hardware failures, collaborating with internal teams and external vendors to identify systemic issues and drive permanent solutions.
  • Manage the end-to-end hardware lifecycle, from initial evaluation and procurement through deployment, maintenance, and eventual decommissioning and disposal.
  • Create and maintain a comprehensive set of hardware standards, configurations, and technical documentation for all approved enterprise systems.
  • Perform detailed cost-benefit analysis and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) modeling for new hardware acquisitions to support budget planning and financial decision-making.
  • Collaborate with supply chain and procurement teams to manage vendor relationships, negotiate pricing, and ensure a stable and resilient hardware supply chain.
  • Analyze system-level performance telemetry and operational data to identify opportunities for performance tuning, capacity planning, and infrastructure optimization.
  • Lead the technical qualification process for second-source components to mitigate supply chain risks and ensure business continuity.
  • Design and maintain lab environments, including system setup, configuration, and instrumentation required for rigorous hardware testing and validation.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve escalated hardware-related incidents and problems impacting our global data centers and enterprise services.
  • Track and manage the entire hardware asset inventory, ensuring data accuracy within our IT Asset Management (ITAM) and CMDB systems.
  • Develop and maintain reporting dashboards that provide visibility into hardware fleet health, performance metrics, and capacity utilization.
  • Participate in the design and review of new data center and infrastructure deployments, providing expert guidance on hardware selection and physical layout.
  • Author detailed technical reports, white papers, and presentations to communicate test results, analysis, and recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Define and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for hardware reliability, availability, and performance across the infrastructure fleet.
  • Work directly with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs) to resolve firmware and hardware bugs.
  • Support capacity planning initiatives by analyzing current hardware usage and forecasting future requirements based on business growth projections.
  • Develop automation scripts (e.g., using Python or PowerShell) to streamline hardware testing, data collection, and system provisioning processes.
  • Ensure all hardware solutions comply with company security policies, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Deep understanding of computer and server architecture, including CPUs, GPUs, memory, storage (NVMe, SSD, HDD), and networking components.
  • Proficiency with industry-standard hardware diagnostic, benchmarking, and stress-testing tools (e.g., PassMark, AIDA64, FIO, Iometer, SPEC benchmarks).
  • Hands-on experience with server operating systems (e.g., Linux, Windows Server) and virtualization technologies (e.g., VMware, KVM).
  • Scripting and automation skills using languages such as Python, PowerShell, or Bash to automate testing and data analysis.
  • Strong data analysis capabilities with proficiency in tools like Excel, SQL, and experience with visualization platforms (Tableau, Power BI).
  • Experience with IT Asset Management (ITAM) principles and software for tracking the hardware lifecycle.
  • Knowledge of data center infrastructure, including power, cooling, rack/stack, and cabling standards.
  • Familiarity with network hardware (switches, routers, NICs) and protocols (TCP/IP, Ethernet).
  • Ability to read and interpret technical schematics, block diagrams, and engineering specifications.
  • Excellent technical writing and documentation skills, with experience creating test plans, technical reports, and standards documents.
  • Experience working directly with hardware vendors (OEMs/ODMs) for technical support and product evaluation.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
