A Hardware Operator is a hands-on IT professional who serves as the bedrock of an organization's physical technology infrastructure. This role is fundamentally responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and decommissioning of hardware within a data center or IT environment. They ensure the physical health, connectivity, and operational readiness of servers, storage systems, and network devices. Functioning as the "smart hands" of the data center, the Hardware Operator executes tasks that require physical presence, from replacing a failed component to managing complex cabling, thereby guaranteeing the stability and performance upon which all digital services depend.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Diligently install, rack, stack, and cable servers, network equipment, and storage arrays in data center racks according to precise deployment plans and industry best practices.
  • Perform comprehensive, hands-on troubleshooting and diagnostics to identify and resolve hardware failures on a variety of server platforms (e.g., Dell, HPE, Supermicro) and network devices.
  • Execute hardware break-fix activities, including the replacement of failed components such as hard drives, RAM modules, power supplies, CPUs, and motherboards in a live production environment.
  • Proactively monitor the physical environment of the data center, including power distribution units (PDUs), uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), and cooling systems, to ensure they operate within optimal parameters.
  • Provide essential "remote hands" and "smart hands" support for remote engineering teams, executing commands and performing physical tasks on their behalf to facilitate troubleshooting and system management.
  • Manage and maintain the structured cabling infrastructure, including running, terminating, and testing both copper and fiber optic cables to ensure reliable connectivity.
  • Oversee the shipping and receiving of all IT hardware, meticulously unboxing, inspecting for damage, and preparing new equipment for deployment.
  • Decommission and process retired hardware, ensuring all components are properly disposed of or recycled and that all data is securely sanitized according to strict security protocols.
  • Respond to automated alerts and user-generated tickets for hardware-related issues, ensuring timely acknowledgment, diagnosis, and resolution in line with service level agreements (SLAs).
  • Conduct routine physical inspections and preventative maintenance on all data center hardware to proactively identify potential issues before they impact service.
  • Manage physical access control to the data center, escorting vendors and other personnel while ensuring security policies are strictly followed at all times.
  • Participate in capacity planning by providing accurate data on space, power, and cooling consumption and availability within the data center.
  • Perform firmware and BIOS updates on servers and other hardware components as part of a regular maintenance schedule or to address specific vulnerabilities.
  • Assist in the physical build-out and expansion of data center cages and rows, including the installation of new racks and power infrastructure.

Secondary Functions

  • Meticulously maintain a detailed and accurate inventory of all hardware assets, spare parts, and consumables using dedicated asset management software.
  • Create and update documentation for data center processes, procedures, and hardware configurations to ensure knowledge is shared and accessible across the team.
  • Collaborate closely with Systems, Network, and Storage engineering teams to plan and execute hardware deployments, upgrades, and migrations.
  • Participate in on-call rotations to provide 24/7 emergency support for critical hardware failures and data center incidents.
  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis.
  • Contribute to the organization's data strategy and roadmap.
  • Collaborate with business units to translate data needs into engineering requirements.
  • Participate in sprint planning and agile ceremonies within the data engineering team.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Hardware Troubleshooting: Proficient in diagnosing and resolving issues with server and network components, including motherboards, CPUs, RAM, and storage devices.
  • Data Center Operations: Strong understanding of data center principles, including power, cooling, rack management, and physical security.
  • Server Hardware: Hands-on experience with enterprise-grade server hardware from major vendors like Dell (PowerEdge), HPE (ProLiant), or similar.
  • Network Cabling: Skilled in installing, terminating, and testing structured cabling, including Cat6/Cat6a copper and single/multi-mode fiber optics.
  • Operating System Fundamentals: Basic knowledge of navigating and performing tasks in command-line interfaces for both Linux (RHEL, CentOS, Ubuntu) and Windows Server environments.
  • Ticketing Systems: Experience using IT Service Management (ITSM) platforms such as Jira, ServiceNow, or Cherwell for managing incidents and service requests.
  • Asset Management: Familiarity with inventory and asset management tools and practices to track the lifecycle of hardware.
  • Safety Protocols: Knowledge of data center safety procedures, including proper lifting techniques, electrical safety, and emergency protocols.

Soft Skills

  • Attention to Detail: Meticulous and precise when performing tasks like cabling, component installation, and updating documentation.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

High School Diploma or GED, supplemented by relevant technical certifications (e.g., CompTIA A+, Server+, Network+).

Preferred Education:

Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a technology-related field.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

1-3 years of hands-on experience in a data center, IT operations, or a similar hardware support role.

Preferred:
