Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute the precise installation of solid, engineered, and luxury vinyl plank flooring using various methods, including nail-down, glue-down, and floating installations.
  • Perform comprehensive site preparation, including subfloor leveling, cleaning, and moisture testing, to ensure a stable and long-lasting installation.
  • Operate heavy-duty sanding equipment, such as drum sanders and edgers, to meticulously sand new and existing hardwood floors to a smooth, uniform surface.
  • Apply a variety of stains, sealers, and finishes (both water-based and oil-based) with expert technique to achieve the desired color, sheen, and durability.
  • Expertly repair and restore damaged hardwood floors, including scratch removal, board replacement, and blending new sections with existing flooring.
  • Measure, cut, and install trim and molding, such as baseboards and quarter-round, to provide a clean and finished look to every project.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, floor plans, and work orders to understand project scope, layout, and specific client requirements.
  • Maintain direct and professional communication with clients on-site, providing project updates, answering questions, and ensuring complete customer satisfaction.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve common installation and finishing issues, such as uneven subfloors, moisture problems, or finish blemishes.
  • Skillfully install complex patterns, such as herringbone and chevron, and create custom inlays, borders, and medallions.
  • Manage on-site materials, ensuring proper quantities are available and that all materials are acclimated correctly to the job site environment.
  • Adhere strictly to all safety protocols and OSHA guidelines, maintaining a safe and clean work area for yourself, the team, and the client.
  • Conduct final walkthroughs with clients or project managers to ensure all aspects of the project meet or exceed quality standards and expectations.
  • Perform detailed demolition and removal of old flooring materials, including carpet, tile, and existing wood, and dispose of debris properly.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain, clean, and perform routine preventative maintenance on all company-provided tools and equipment to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
  • Assist in the training and mentoring of apprentice-level installers, sharing knowledge of techniques, safety, and best practices.
  • Keep accurate records of time, materials used, and work performed for each project to assist with job costing and invoicing.
  • Stay current with industry trends, new materials, finishing products, and installation techniques to continuously improve skills and service offerings.
  • Manage on-site inventory of fasteners, adhesives, and finishing supplies, communicating needs to the project manager to avoid project delays.
  • Participate in team meetings to discuss project schedules, challenges, and opportunities for process improvement.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced Sanding & Finishing: Proficiency with drum sanders, edgers, buffers, and other floor sanding equipment. Deep knowledge of stains, sealers, and polyurethane/water-based finishes.
  • Installation Expertise: Mastery of nail-down, glue-down, and floating installation methods for solid and engineered hardwood.
  • Wood Species Knowledge: Familiarity with the properties, characteristics, and workability of various domestic and exotic wood species.
  • Repair and Restoration: Skilled in board replacement, scratch and gouge repair, and color matching/blending for seamless restoration work.
  • Moisture Testing: Proficient in using moisture meters for both wood and subfloors (wood/concrete) to prevent flooring failure.
  • Complex Layouts: Experience installing intricate patterns like herringbone, chevron, and custom inlays or borders.
  • Tool Proficiency: Competent and safe operation of power tools including miter saws, table saws, jamb saws, and pneumatic nailers.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate from a vocational or trade school in Carpentry or Flooring Installation.
  • NWFA (National Wood Flooring Association) certification is highly regarded.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 3-7 years of professional, hands-on experience dedicated specifically to hardwood floor installation and refinishing.

  • A portfolio of completed projects showcasing a variety of styles, finishes, and custom work is highly desirable. Experience leading a small crew or working independently on high-end residential projects is a significant plus.
