Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Perform comprehensive visual and dimensional inspections of highly complex wire harnesses, cable assemblies, and electromechanical systems at various stages of production.
- Meticulously verify that all assemblies conform to engineering drawings, schematics, work orders, bills of material (BOMs), and customer-specific requirements.
- Utilize a wide range of precision measuring instruments, including calipers, micrometers, pin gauges, and optical comparators, to validate physical dimensions and tolerances.
- Conduct a full suite of electrical tests, such as continuity, insulation resistance, and dielectric withstanding voltage (Hipot), using both automated and manual test equipment.
- Scrutinize solder joints and crimp terminations to ensure full compliance with rigorous industry standards like IPC/WHMA-A-620 and J-STD-001.
- Accurately document all inspection results, non-conformances, and rework requirements within the company's Quality Management System (QMS) or ERP software.
- Generate, review, and maintain detailed and accurate inspection records, first article inspection reports (FAIR), and data logs to ensure full product traceability.
- Clearly identify, tag, and segregate defective or non-conforming components and assemblies to prevent their unintended use and facilitate disposition.
- Collaborate proactively with manufacturing, purchasing, and engineering teams to investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve complex quality issues in a timely manner.
- Execute and document First Article Inspections (FAIs) for new product introductions or process changes, providing clear and constructive feedback to the production team.
- Routinely verify that all hand tools, crimpers, and test equipment are properly calibrated, identified, and maintained according to established schedules.
- Read and interpret complex technical documentation, including multi-level assembly instructions, process specifications, and quality control plans.
- Systematically verify part numbers, wire colors and gauges, connector types, backshells, and hardware against the official bill of materials before and during assembly.
- Conduct critical in-process inspections at key manufacturing steps to provide real-time feedback and prevent the recurrence of defects downstream.
- Perform the final inspection and acceptance testing of finished products, ensuring they are 100% compliant with all quality standards prior to packaging and shipment.
- Actively participate in root cause analysis (RCA) and corrective action (CAPA) activities for recurring defects, suggesting robust and sustainable solutions.
- Assist in the training and certification of assembly technicians on critical quality standards, visual acceptance criteria, and proper handling techniques.
- Diligently uphold and enforce all safety protocols and electrostatic discharge (ESD) prevention procedures within the manufacturing and inspection areas.
- Serve as a technical point of contact and interface with customer source inspectors during on-site product acceptance reviews and audits.
- Contribute to the organization's continuous improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities to enhance process efficiency, reduce waste, and improve product quality.
- Review and approve completed manufacturing travelers and associated paperwork, ensuring all required steps, signatures, and data are present and accurate.
- Manage the non-conforming material report (NCMR) process from initiation through to the final disposition and closure of the report.
Secondary Functions
- Support engineering and production teams by providing detailed feedback on the manufacturability and testability of new designs.
- Participate actively in continuous improvement (Kaizen) events and process optimization workshops aimed at enhancing quality and productivity.
- Assist in maintaining the calibration schedule and records for all inspection tools, gauges, and test equipment within the department.
- Contribute to the development, review, and refinement of inspection procedures, work instructions, and visual standards.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- IPC/WHMA-A-620 Certification: A current certification as a Certified IPC Specialist (CIS) or Trainer (CIT) is foundational for this role.
- Blueprint & Schematic Interpretation: Deep proficiency in reading and interpreting complex engineering drawings, wiring diagrams, and product specifications.
- Precision Measurement: Skilled in the use of calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and other dimensional inspection tools.
- Electrical Testing: Hands-on experience operating electrical test equipment such as multimeters, hipot testers, and automated continuity testers (e.g., Cirris, DIT-MCO).
- Crimping & Soldering Expertise: Strong knowledge of proper crimping techniques and the ability to inspect solder joints per J-STD-001 criteria.
- GD&T Knowledge: A solid understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing symbols and principles as they apply to connectors and hardware.
- Technical Documentation: Ability to clearly and concisely document findings, create detailed inspection reports, and manage non-conformance records.
- QMS/ERP Systems: Familiarity with using Quality Management System (QMS) software and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems for data entry and traceability.
- Component Identification: Ability to accurately identify a wide variety of electronic components, connectors, wire types, and hardware.
- First Article Inspection (FAI): Experience conducting and documenting inspections in accordance with the AS9102 standard.
