ManufacturingApparel & TextilesMillineryProduction

🎯 Role Definition

The Hat Cutter is a skilled production specialist who prepares and cuts hat materials (felt, straw, leather, fabric, trims) to precise patterns and tolerances using hand cutting, straight-knife, clicker/die presses and automated cutting systems. This role focuses on translating patterns and tech packs into accurately cut components, minimizing material waste, maintaining cutting equipment, and working with production, quality and design teams to meet delivery schedules and quality KPIs. Ideal candidates demonstrate strong manual dexterity, pattern-reading ability, and a track record in garment or headwear manufacturing.

📈 Career Progression

Typical Career Path

Entry Point From:

  • Sewing Operator, Apparel Production Worker or General Manufacturing Operative
  • Millinery Apprentice or Pattern Making Assistant
  • Textile Cutter or Material Handler

Advancement To:

  • Senior Hat Cutter / Lead Cutter
  • Production Supervisor / Team Leader (Millinery)
  • Pattern Maker / Head Pattern Technician
  • Millinery Designer or Production Manager

Lateral Moves:

  • Quality Inspector (Textiles/Apparel)
  • Material Planner / Inventory Coordinator

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Interpret technical drawings, patterns, specifications and tech packs to accurately reproduce hat components, ensuring every piece meets dimensional tolerances and design intent.
  • Set up and operate clicker presses, die cutters, straight-knife machines and handheld cutting tools to produce consistent, repeatable hat parts while adhering to safety procedures.
  • Create, adjust and maintain cutting dies and punches, including trimming and sharpening dies, to ensure crisp cuts and reduce rework across production runs.
  • Lay out patterns on material to optimize grain, nap and orientation and to minimize waste, achieving material yield targets and cost-efficient consumption.
  • Accurately mark, trace and transfer pattern lines, notches, drill points and alignment marks onto felt, straw, leather and fabric using chalk, markers or laser guides.
  • Perform hand cutting and finishing on delicate materials where machine cutting is inappropriate, preserving edge finish and structural integrity.
  • Operate and program CAD/CAM or digital cutting systems (where available) to produce complex shapes, nested patterns, and repeatable component sets for high-volume production.
  • Inspect cut pieces for defects, dimensional accuracy, and quality of finish; segregate and document non-conforming materials and initiate corrective action with quality control.
  • Maintain daily production logs, cutting tickets and material usage records to support traceability, cost reporting and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Coordinate with Pattern Makers and Designers to refine patterns, suggest modifications for manufacturability, and implement first-article adjustments prior to full runs.
  • Monitor machine performance and perform routine maintenance, cleaning and minor repairs on cutting equipment to maximize uptime and ensure consistent cut quality.
  • Adhere to workplace safety standards, PPE requirements and machine lockout/tagout procedures to ensure personal and team safety in the cutting area.
  • Prioritize jobs, sequence cutting queues and stage materials to meet daily production schedules and urgent customer orders, communicating status to production planning.
  • Train, mentor and provide hands-on guidance to junior cutters and apprentices in proper cutting techniques, die handling and quality expectations.
  • Collaborate with sewing and assembly teams to understand fit, seam allowances and edge treatments so cut components align with downstream processes.
  • Reclaim and manage off-cuts and scrap for reuse where appropriate, implementing best practices for nesting and yield improvement to reduce materials cost.
  • Participate in root-cause analysis for recurring cutting defects and implement process improvements or tooling changes to eliminate defects and reduce scrap.
  • Support seasonal scale-up or custom order production by performing prototype cuts and sample iterations, ensuring accurate transfer of samples into full production.
  • Maintain an organized, clean and ergonomic cutting area, ensuring all tools, dies and materials are stored safely and inventory levels are visible to planners.
  • Meet and exceed production KPIs including throughput, on-time delivery, first-pass yield and material waste targets while maintaining quality and appearance standards.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in packaging and labeling of cut components for transfer to assembly, ensuring correct part counts and batch/lot identification.
  • Support ad-hoc production data requests and daily reporting to Production Planning to help balance workloads and forecast material needs.
  • Contribute hands-on feedback to continuous improvement or lean initiatives aimed at reducing cycle time and material waste on the cutting floor.
  • Collaborate with procurement to identify critical material shortages or quality issues and recommend alternative materials or suppliers when necessary.
  • Help maintain Health & Safety documentation for the cutting area and participate in safety audits and toolbox talks as required.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)
