Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Conceptualize and drive the entire design process for seasonal and core headwear collections, from initial inspiration and mood board creation to final product realization.
- Generate a high volume of original, innovative, and commercially viable hat designs using a combination of hand-sketching, digital illustration, and CAD software.
- Conduct in-depth seasonal trend research by analyzing global fashion markets, runway shows, trade publications, street style, and competitor activity to inform design direction.
- Create and meticulously maintain highly detailed and accurate technical packages (tech packs) for overseas and domestic factories, ensuring all construction details, measurements, and material specifications are clear.
- Develop and present cohesive color palettes and material stories for each collection that are on-brand and align with overarching seasonal themes.
- Source, select, and approve all raw materials, including fabrics, leathers, straws, felts, and trims, balancing aesthetics with quality, cost, and performance requirements.
- Lead the sample review process, providing clear and constructive feedback on prototypes, fit samples, and pre-production samples to ensure design integrity is maintained.
- Collaborate directly with technical designers and pattern makers to perfect the fit, shape, and construction of each style, solving any technical challenges that arise.
- Manage the design and development calendar for the headwear category, ensuring all key milestones and deadlines are met from concept to final delivery.
- Create compelling presentation materials, including design boards and line sheets, to effectively communicate the seasonal collection to internal stakeholders like merchandising, sales, and marketing.
- Maintain a deep understanding of various hat construction techniques, including blocking, sewing, and molding, to design products that are both beautiful and manufacturable.
- Approve lab dips, strike-offs, and other material submits to ensure color and quality standards are consistently met throughout the production process.
- Travel domestically and internationally for market research, trend shopping, factory visits, and collaboration with development partners as needed.
- Curate and manage the physical and digital library of materials, trims, and final product samples for the headwear category.
