Primary Functions

  • Trim, finish, and embellish straw, felt, wool, and synthetic hats according to technical sketches, designer notes, and production templates, ensuring each hat meets dimensional and aesthetic specifications.

  • Read and interpret millinery patterns, technical drawings, and measurement sheets to reproduce designer-approved shapes and proportions for bespoke and production hats.
  • Perform size adjustments, alterations, and custom fittings for made-to-measure orders, coordinating directly with customers or fitting teams to ensure comfort and visual balance.
  • Carry out quality control inspections at key production points, identifying defects (uneven brims, loose stitches, misaligned trims) and implementing corrective actions or rework as needed.
  • Maintain and calibrate blocking equipment, steam irons, hat stretchers, and cutting tools; report and arrange repair or replacement of specialized millinery machinery.
  • Manage production-level finishing with attention to throughput targets, minimizing rework and scrap while maintaining high standards of finish and presentation.
  • Prepare hats for shipping and retail presentation: properly packaging, labeling (size, SKU, care instructions), and coordinating with logistics for timely dispatch.
  • Train and mentor junior trimmers and apprentices on hand-finishing techniques, safe machine operation, and quality standards to build team capability and consistency.
  • Collaborate with design and production planning teams to assess materials, trim availability, and lead times; recommend alternates and cost-saving trim substitutions when appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate production records: trim usage, time per style, defect logs, and batch notes for continuous improvement and capacity planning.
  • Implement and follow health and safety procedures specific to millinery production, including safe handling of adhesives, sharp tools, steam equipment, and repetitive task ergonomics.
  • Select appropriate adhesives, interfacings, and binding materials for different hat bodies and trims, understanding compatibility with straw, felt, and fabric surfaces.
  • Manage inventory of commonly used trims, ribbons, buckles, and hobby supplies at the trimming station; initiate reorder requests and track consumption rates.
  • Support product development by producing prototypes, samples, and one-off trims for design reviews and photoshoots; provide feedback on manufacturability and assembly methods.
  • Conduct color matching and texture coordination for trim selections, advising designers and buyers on visual impact, contrast, and seasonal relevance.
  • Implement finishing techniques for water-resistant or weather-treated hats, including seam sealing and appropriate protective trims or linings.
  • Ensure consistent brand presentation by adhering to company standards for finish quality, labeling, hangtags, and retail-ready condition.
  • Participate in root-cause analysis for recurring defects and contribute to process documentation, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and training materials to reduce waste and speed up onboarding.
  • Support seasonal ramp-ups and production surges by flexing to different styles and working with cross-functional teams to meet deadlines without compromising quality.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with special projects such as bespoke commissions, theatrical and film costume orders, and collaborative designer capsule collections.
  • Help maintain a clean, organized workstation and contribute to 5S or lean manufacturing initiatives to improve workflow and safety.
  • Provide input to merchandising and retail teams on trim trends, customer preferences, and product presentation ideas.
  • Coordinate with procurement to test and sample new trims, findings, and sustainable material alternatives for production feasibility.
