Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop and implement comprehensive, long-term garden management plans and seasonal work schedules to ensure year-round interest and peak horticultural presentation.
  • Lead, manage, mentor, and train a team of gardeners, apprentices, and volunteers, overseeing daily work allocation, performance reviews, and professional development.
  • Plan, source, and manage the procurement of all plants, seeds, bulbs, and other horticultural materials in line with design schemes and budgetary constraints.
  • Oversee all aspects of plant health care, including the development and implementation of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies to control pests and diseases sustainably.
  • Manage and monitor soil health and nutrition across the property, implementing composting, soil amendment, and fertilization programs.
  • Direct all horticultural practices including planting, pruning, turf management, irrigation, propagation, and specialized care for unique or rare plant collections.
  • Create and execute innovative and aesthetically pleasing planting designs for seasonal displays, borders, and new garden areas, ensuring they align with the overall vision for the estate.
  • Develop and manage the annual horticultural budget, including forecasting expenses for staffing, equipment, supplies, and capital projects.
  • Ensure the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and repair of all gardening machinery, tools, and irrigation systems.
  • Maintain meticulous records of plant collections, garden activities, chemical applications, and staff training in compliance with industry standards.
  • Guarantee that all garden operations adhere to health and safety regulations, conducting regular risk assessments and ensuring staff use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Liaise with the property owner, estate manager, or board to provide regular updates, present proposals for garden improvements, and align horticultural strategy with organizational goals.
  • Manage small-to-medium scale landscape projects from conception to completion, including working with external contractors and landscape architects.
  • Oversee the propagation of plants for use within the garden, preserving heritage varieties and experimenting with new species.
  • Direct and participate in arboricultural work, including the assessment, pruning, and care of trees and large shrubs, often in collaboration with specialist arborists.
  • Champion sustainable and environmentally responsible gardening practices, including water conservation, green waste recycling, and biodiversity enhancement.
  • Stay current with the latest horticultural research, trends, techniques, and technologies to introduce innovation and best practices to the garden.
  • Manage glasshouse or conservatory environments, controlling climate, pests, and watering to support specialized plant collections.
  • Prepare and maintain all areas of the garden for special events, seasonal openings, and visits from key stakeholders or the public.
  • Develop and lead garden tours, workshops, or educational programs for visitors, sharing knowledge and passion for the garden and its collections.
