Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop, articulate, and execute the comprehensive underwriting strategy and philosophy for all lines of business, ensuring direct alignment with the company's overarching business goals, market positioning, and profitability targets.
  • Define, document, and continuously iterate on the company's risk appetite framework, underwriting guidelines, pricing methodologies, and authority levels to foster profitable growth and a resilient, balanced portfolio.
  • Provide strategic leadership, mentorship, and professional development to the entire underwriting department, building and nurturing a culture of excellence, critical thinking, accountability, and proactive risk management.
  • Oversee the end-to-end management and performance of the company's insurance portfolio, conducting deep-dive analyses of trends, rate adequacy, loss ratios, and market penetration to inform data-driven strategic adjustments.
  • Act as the ultimate technical referral point and final decision-maker for the most complex, high-value, or unusual risks that exceed the authority of the underwriting team, providing expert guidance and sound judgment.
  • Chair the Underwriting Committee, guiding strategic discussions on portfolio performance, large-loss reviews, market trends, and the approval of new product initiatives or significant changes to underwriting policy.
  • Drive the financial performance of the underwriting function, taking ownership of the P&L for the book of business and ensuring that premium, loss, and expense targets are consistently met or exceeded.
  • Collaborate closely with the executive leadership team (CEO, CFO, CRO) to provide expert insights on market dynamics, competitive landscape, and emerging risks, helping to shape overall corporate strategy.
  • Foster strong, collaborative relationships with key distribution partners, brokers, and MGAs, acting as a senior representative of the company to negotiate terms, resolve issues, and align on growth strategies.
  • Champion the modernization of underwriting practices through the adoption of new technologies, data analytics, and third-party data sources to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and risk selection.
  • Ensure that all underwriting operations, policies, and procedures are in strict compliance with local, national, and international regulations, and effectively manage relationships with regulatory bodies and auditors.
  • Direct the quality assurance and audit programs for the underwriting function, establishing robust controls and review processes to maintain the integrity and consistency of underwriting decisions across the team.
  • Lead the strategic planning and budgeting process for the underwriting department, allocating resources effectively to support business growth and operational excellence.
  • Analyze and interpret reinsurance structures and strategies, working alongside the reinsurance team or external partners to optimize risk transfer and protect the company's balance sheet.
  • Serve as a key partner to the Head of Claims, establishing feedback loops and collaborative processes to analyze loss trends and translate claims insights into actionable underwriting adjustments.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university.

Preferred Education:

  • Master of Business Administration (MBA)
  • Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), ACII/FCII, or equivalent advanced professional designation.

Experience Requirements
