Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Design, develop, and maintain complex SQL queries, stored procedures, and data extraction processes to access and manipulate data from various healthcare information systems.
  • Analyze large, complex datasets related to patient care, clinical outcomes, claims data, and operational performance to identify significant trends, patterns, and variances.
  • Develop, manage, and deliver insightful and interactive dashboards, reports, and visualizations using BI tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or Qlik for clinical and executive leadership.
  • Translate complex business and clinical questions into well-defined analytical projects and data requirements for investigation.
  • Interpret analytical findings and present clear, concise, and actionable recommendations to diverse stakeholders, including physicians, nurses, administrators, and executives.
  • Ensure strict adherence to data governance standards and patient privacy regulations, including HIPAA, by maintaining data security and confidentiality in all analyses.
  • Collaborate with clinical quality improvement teams to provide data-driven support for initiatives aimed at enhancing patient safety, care quality, and population health.
  • Perform data validation and quality assurance checks to guarantee the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of all data and subsequent reporting.
  • Support population health management strategies by analyzing patient population data to identify at-risk groups and measure the effectiveness of intervention programs.
  • Conduct statistical analysis, including descriptive and inferential statistics, to test hypotheses and uncover root causes of trends in clinical and operational data.
  • Work closely with IT and data engineering teams to define data requirements, troubleshoot data issues, and contribute to the enhancement of the enterprise data warehouse.
  • Develop and maintain a deep understanding of healthcare data sources, including EMR/EHR systems (e.g., Epic, Cerner), practice management systems, and financial databases.
  • Automate recurring reports and analytical processes to improve efficiency and enable self-service analytics for business users.
  • Monitor and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) and organizational metrics related to clinical quality, operational efficiency, and financial performance.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for all reports, dashboards, and analytical methodologies to ensure consistency and knowledge sharing.
  • Provide analytical support for healthcare cost and utilization analysis, helping the organization identify opportunities for cost savings and resource optimization.
  • Mine data from primary and secondary sources, then reorganize said data in a format that can be easily read by either human or machine.
  • Evaluate and support the implementation of new data analysis tools and technologies to continuously improve the organization's analytical capabilities.
  • Partner with finance departments to reconcile clinical data with financial data, supporting revenue cycle analysis and reimbursement modeling.
  • Conduct geospatial analysis to understand patient demographics, access to care, and the impact of social determinants of health on specific populations.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced proficiency in SQL for querying complex relational databases and data manipulation.
  • Expertise in creating interactive dashboards and reports using data visualization tools like Tableau or Power BI.
  • Strong experience with a statistical programming language such as R or Python (with libraries like Pandas, NumPy, SciPy).
  • Deep understanding of healthcare data terminologies and standards (e.g., ICD-10, CPT, HL7, LOINC).
  • Hands-on experience with Electronic Health Record (EHR/EMR) systems and their data structures (e.g., Epic Clarity/Caboodle, Cerner).
  • Solid knowledge of data warehousing principles, ETL processes, and database architecture.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including advanced functions, pivot tables, and data modeling.
