Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Install, assemble and commission residential and commercial heating systems (gas, oil, electric, condensing boilers, furnaces, unit heaters and heat pumps) in strict accordance with manufacturer specifications, local building codes, NFPA standards and company installation checklists.
- Perform thorough preventive maintenance on heating equipment — cleaning burners, replacing air filters, inspecting heat exchangers, lubricating motors, verifying flue integrity and documenting results in the CMMS to increase equipment uptime and efficiency.
- Diagnose complex heating system failures using combustion analyzers, multimeters, pressure gauges, infrared cameras and diagnostic software; analyze symptoms and execute safe, cost-effective repairs on first visit whenever possible.
- Read and interpret blueprints, piping and wiring schematics, loop diagrams and manufacturer cut sheets to plan installations, coordinate trades and ensure correct system sequencing for multi‑trade projects.
- Test, calibrate and adjust thermostats, modulating gas valves, pressuretrols, limit switches, flame sensors and control boards to optimize performance and ensure occupant safety.
- Replace defective components including burners, heat exchangers, control assemblies, blowers, pumps, valves and sensors; verify repairs meet OEM and warranty requirements and log parts usage for inventory control.
- Conduct combustion analysis, flue and vent inspections, and gas leak detection; implement corrective actions, document test results and ensure compliance with environmental and safety regulations.
- Commission new heating systems: verify fuel and electrical connections, confirm proper venting and draft, set control parameters, perform functional testing and provide written commissioning reports to clients and project managers.
- Coordinate with project managers, electricians, plumbers and general contractors to sequence work, secure permits and inspections, escalate issues, and deliver projects on schedule and within budget.
- Provide clear, professional customer service: explain diagnosis and repair options, present accurate cost estimates, discuss energy-efficiency improvements and rebate opportunities, and obtain informed sign-off on recommended work.
- Maintain accurate service reports, digital work orders and parts records using mobile service software; ensure timely billing, warranty documentation and follow-up appointments.
- Perform emergency response and on-call service for critical heating failures; triage issues, perform temporary measures to restore heat and plan permanent repairs to minimize downtime and occupant risk.
- Execute retrofit and upgrade projects such as oil-to-gas conversions, high-efficiency condensing boiler installations and heat pump integrations, including closeout documentation and customer training.
- Inspect and maintain auxiliary components — circulator pumps, expansion tanks, condensate drains, insulation, valves and piping — to preserve whole-system performance and prevent recurring failures.
- Participate in continuous improvement by documenting root-cause analysis for repeat failures, recommending design changes, and feeding back to engineering and procurement teams to reduce lifecycle costs.
- Maintain vehicle stock levels of common parts and tools, proactively order specialty items, and manage parts return/warranty processes to improve first‑call resolution rates.
- Adhere to all company and OSHA safety policies including lockout/tagout, confined space procedures, proper handling and disposal of fuel/oil/waste, and PPE usage; participate in safety training and hazard reporting.
- Support warranty claims and manufacturer support activities by documenting failure details, coordinating with technical reps, and implementing approved corrective actions.
- Conduct energy audits and provide clients with actionable recommendations (zoning, programmable thermostats, insulation, equipment replacement) to improve efficiency and reduce heating costs.
- Mentor and train apprentices and junior technicians on installation best practices, troubleshooting methodology, safety procedures and customer interactions to build team capability.
- Keep current with industry trends, new heating technologies, manufacturer trainings and code updates; obtain and maintain certifications (e.g., NATE, EPA 608, state boiler operator license) to ensure competency across equipment types.
- Assist estimating and proposal preparation for installations and service contracts by developing labor and materials take-offs, scheduling forecasts and risk assessments.
