Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Operate a diverse range of heavy construction equipment, including excavators, bulldozers, front-end loaders, and graders, to move earth, rock, and other materials according to project plans.
- Perform site preparation activities, including clearing, grading, excavating, and backfilling to establish the required elevations and contours for foundations, roadways, and utilities.
- Load, unload, and transport construction materials, tools, and equipment across the job site, ensuring proper distribution and staging for various crews.
- Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and construction documents to ensure work is performed to the correct specifications and standards.
- Install and maintain essential site safety and traffic control measures, such as barricades, warning lights, cones, and signage, to protect both the public and on-site personnel.
- Dig trenches for utilities, foundations, and drainage systems using both heavy machinery and hand tools in areas with limited access, ensuring proper depth and slope.
- Assist in the assembly and disassembly of temporary structures, including scaffolding, shoring systems, and concrete forms, ensuring structural integrity and safety.
- Pour, spread, level, and finish concrete for slabs, foundations, and other structures using screeds, floats, and power trowels.
- Operate a variety of handheld and power tools, such as jackhammers, concrete saws, grinders, and compaction equipment, for demolition, cutting, and finishing tasks.
- Guide and signal heavy equipment operators during lifting, moving, and placement of materials to ensure precise and safe operations.
- Perform safe rigging of heavy loads, selecting appropriate slings, cables, and chains for crane lifts and other hoisting activities.
- Lay pipe for storm or sanitary sewers, drains, and water mains, assisting with alignment, joining, and bedding of pipes.
- Adhere rigorously to all company and OSHA safety regulations, consistently wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) and actively participating in creating a safe work environment.
- Control and direct the flow of water on-site by setting up and operating pumps, hoses, and temporary drainage systems.
- Perform demolition of existing structures, pavements, or utilities to clear the way for new construction, ensuring debris is managed and removed safely.
- Assist specialized craft workers, such as carpenters, welders, and electricians, by preparing work areas, holding materials, and providing general support.
- Secure construction sites at the end of the day by properly storing materials, securing equipment, and verifying all safety measures are in place.
- Conduct pre-start checks on all machinery and equipment, reporting any mechanical issues or maintenance needs to the site foreman immediately.
- Participate in the installation of shoring and bracing systems within trenches and excavations to prevent soil collapse and ensure worker safety.
- Apply waterproofing compounds, sealants, and curing agents to concrete and other surfaces as specified in project documents.
- Maintain a clean and organized job site by clearing away debris, scrap materials, and potential hazards throughout the workday.
Secondary Functions
- Participate actively in daily "toolbox talks" and safety meetings to stay informed of site-specific hazards, procedures, and project goals.
- Assist the site supervisor with inventory management of tools, equipment, and consumable materials, reporting when supplies are low.
- Perform routine maintenance, cleaning, and minor repairs on hand tools, power tools, and other small equipment to ensure longevity and safe operation.
- Provide on-the-job guidance and mentorship to new or less experienced construction laborers and apprentices.
- Maintain a simple daily log of tasks completed, equipment used, and any unusual site conditions encountered for project documentation purposes.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Heavy Equipment Operation: Proficiency with excavators, bulldozers, loaders, backhoes, and compaction rollers.
- Blueprint Reading: Ability to read and interpret construction plans, site layouts, and grade stakes.
- Rigging & Signaling: Knowledge of safe rigging practices and universal hand signals for directing crane and equipment operators.
- Site Grading & Leveling: Competency in using laser levels, transits, and other instruments to establish and check grades.
- Concrete Work: Experience in forming, pouring, spreading, and finishing concrete.
- Power Tool Proficiency: Skilled in the safe operation of jackhammers, demolition saws, drills, and grinders.
- Trenching & Shoring: Understanding of OSHA standards for excavation safety, including the installation of trench boxes and shoring.
- Basic Welding: Ability to perform basic tack welding or use a cutting torch is a plus.
- Pipe Laying: Familiarity with techniques for installing sewer, water, and storm drain pipes.
- Asphalt & Paving: Knowledge of asphalt application, raking, and compaction.
- Basic Carpentry: Skills in building concrete forms, bracing, and other temporary wooden structures.
- CDL (Commercial Driver's License): A Class A or B CDL for operating dump trucks and other vehicles is highly desirable.
