Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute advanced diagnostics on complex electronic and computer-controlled systems in modern agricultural equipment, utilizing manufacturer-specific software (like John Deere Service Advisor or CNH EST) to pinpoint and resolve faults.
  • Perform comprehensive in-frame and out-of-frame overhauls on a variety of high-horsepower diesel engines, ensuring all components meet or exceed OEM specifications.
  • Diagnose and repair intricate hydraulic and hydrostatic systems, including pumps, motors, valves, and cylinders, ensuring proper pressure, flow, and operational performance.
  • Conduct major repairs and rebuilds on power-shift, CVT, and hydrostatic transmissions, final drives, and planetary gear systems to restore full functionality.
  • Service and repair advanced harvesting equipment, including combines and forage harvesters, focusing on threshing, separating, and cleaning systems to optimize machine efficiency during critical seasons.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot sophisticated GPS, auto-steer, and other precision agriculture systems, performing calibrations and software updates to ensure field accuracy.
  • Perform welding and fabrication using MIG, TIG, and Stick processes to repair cracked frames, worn-out components, or modify equipment for specific agricultural applications.
  • Conduct pre-season inspections and post-season servicing on a full range of equipment, developing detailed reports and repair plans to prepare machinery for upcoming work.
  • Travel to customer locations for on-site field repairs, demonstrating resourcefulness and efficiency to minimize equipment downtime during planting and harvest.
  • Recondition and refurbish used agricultural equipment for resale, performing a thorough inspection and completing all necessary mechanical and cosmetic repairs to bring it to a sale-ready standard.
  • Install and set up new equipment and attachments, providing basic operational guidance and walkthroughs to customers upon delivery.
  • Manage and execute preventative maintenance programs for customer fleets, tracking service intervals and performing proactive upkeep to prevent major failures.
  • Read and interpret complex technical manuals, schematics, and service bulletins to guide diagnostic and repair procedures accurately.
  • Rebuild and repair air conditioning and HVAC systems on various equipment cabs to ensure operator comfort and safety.
  • Perform diagnostics and repairs on electrical systems, including wiring harnesses, sensors, controllers, and lighting, tracing shorts and open circuits effectively.
  • Address and resolve customer concerns regarding equipment performance, providing clear explanations of the issues found and the repairs performed.
  • Maintain a detailed and accurate record of all work performed, parts used, and time spent on each job using a computerized work order system.
  • Participate in ongoing manufacturer-led training and certification programs to stay current with the latest technology and service procedures.
  • Assemble and set up new agricultural machinery as it is delivered to the dealership or customer, ensuring it is fully operational and field-ready.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to junior mechanics and apprentices, fostering a collaborative and learning-oriented shop environment.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in the shop and service vehicle, adhering to all safety protocols and procedures.
  • Manage the inventory of parts and tools on a field service truck, ensuring it is well-stocked for common repairs.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced Diesel Engine Diagnostics & Repair: Deep understanding of fuel systems, turbochargers, emissions systems (DEF, DPF), and engine mechanics.
  • Hydraulic Systems Expertise: Proficiency in reading hydraulic schematics and troubleshooting complex open and closed-loop systems.
  • Electrical & Electronic Systems Troubleshooting: Skill in using multimeters, oscilloscopes, and diagnostic software to trace and repair electrical issues.
