Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Perform complex diagnostics and root-cause analysis on diesel engines, powertrains, transmissions, drivetrains and final drives using electronic diagnostic tools, oscilloscopes, multimeters and OEM diagnostic software to restore equipment to serviceable condition.
- Conduct scheduled preventive maintenance (PM) and inspections on bulldozers, excavators, loaders, graders, dump trucks, cranes and other heavy equipment per manufacturer specifications and company PM checklists to reduce downtime and extend equipment life.
- Disassemble, inspect, repair and reassemble engine components, fuel systems (injectors, pumps), turbochargers, cylinder heads and gaskets, adhering to torque specs and OEM tolerances.
- Diagnose, repair and rebuild hydraulic systems including pumps, valves, cylinders, hose assemblies and hydraulic controls, and fabricate/replace hydraulic hoses and fittings when necessary.
- Service, troubleshoot and repair electrical/electronic systems: alternators, starters, wiring harnesses, CAN bus modules, sensors, gauges and telematics units; update and configure ECM/ECU settings as required.
- Diagnose and repair transmission and driveline faults including automatic and manual gearboxes, torque converters, differentials, final drives and clutch systems; perform gearbox rebuilds and retorques.
- Perform welding, brazing and metal fabrication to repair frames, mounts, brackets, buckets and structural components using MIG/TIG/arc welding processes while following shop blueprints and weld procedures.
- Execute brake, suspension and steering system repairs: replace brake components, align steering linkages, service air systems and test parking and service brakes to maintain safe operation.
- Conduct on-site field service calls and emergency breakdown repairs at customer locations, construction sites or remote worksites, often performing complex troubleshooting under time pressure and variable environmental conditions.
- Interpret technical manuals, schematics, wiring diagrams and service bulletins to perform repairs to OEM standards and apply engineered fixes for recurring failures.
- Use computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and work order systems to document labor, parts used, downtime, repair history and recommend corrective actions or design changes.
- Manage parts procurement: identify part numbers, order critical components, track backorders and maintain accurate parts inventory levels to minimize repair lead times.
- Perform engine and component performance testing, road tests, load tests and post-repair inspections to verify repairs and ensure equipment meets manufacturer performance criteria.
- Implement and follow safety protocols for confined space entry, lockout/tagout, rigging and heavy lifting; operate hoists, cranes and jacks to move heavy components safely.
- Support warranty claim processing including documentation, photographic evidence, failure analysis and interaction with OEM warranty representatives to secure credit or replacement parts.
- Mentor and train junior technicians and apprentices on proper troubleshooting, safe tool use, diagnostic workflows and best practices to build team capability.
- Apply corrosion control, painting and surface preparation techniques to protect repaired components and maintain fleet appearance and longevity.
- Calibrate and test onboard instrumentation, sensors and controls after component replacement to ensure accurate machine operation and telematics reporting.
- Maintain accurate, timely service reports, preventative maintenance logs and vehicle/equipment history records to support lifecycle management and asset valuation.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives: propose reliability upgrades, root cause corrective actions (RCCA), and cost-saving measures based on failure trends and data analysis.
- Adhere to environmental and hazardous materials handling regulations including proper disposal of oils, coolants, filters and batteries; maintain spill kits and follow company environmental policies.
- Support seasonal preparation activities: winterization, cooling system services, heater and defroster checks and fuel system treatments for cold-weather operation.
- Assist with shop organization and housekeeping: maintain clean work areas, calibrate tools, and participate in tool crib and equipment inventory audits to ensure readiness.
- Coordinate with operations, dispatch and project managers to prioritize work orders, provide accurate time-to-repair estimates and ensure equipment availability aligns with production schedules.
- Troubleshoot telematics and fleet management systems, assist in data collection for predictive maintenance and recommend sensor or monitoring upgrades to improve uptime.
