Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Assist senior mechanics in the systematic diagnosis of diesel engines, transmissions, differentials and drivetrain systems using both visual inspection and electronic diagnostic tools, documenting findings in the work order management system.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance services on heavy-duty trucks and construction equipment including oil changes, filter replacement, fluid top-ups, grease fittings, and scheduled inspection items according to OEM and fleet maintenance schedules.
  • Learn and execute brake system inspections and repairs on air and hydraulic brake systems, including air lines, valves, slack adjusters, S-cams, brake chambers, and ABS diagnostic troubleshooting under mentor guidance.
  • Support engine repair tasks such as cylinder head removal and installation, turbocharger servicing, fuel injection system diagnostics and replacement of injectors, high-pressure lines and fuel pumps following service manuals.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical systems including starter and charging systems, alternators, batteries, wiring harnesses and electronic control modules (ECMs) using multimeters, CAN bus diagnostics and manufacturer software tools.
  • Assist with hydraulic system maintenance and repair including hoses, pumps, cylinders, control valves and filters, and help perform pressure and leak testing to ensure system integrity.
  • Disassemble and reassemble transmissions, clutches, differentials and final drives as part of supervised overhaul and rebuild projects, ensuring proper torque specifications and alignment procedures are followed.
  • Conduct preventive inspections and road tests to verify repairs and safe operation of vehicles, completing detailed test-drive reports and communicating any follow-up repairs required to the service lead.
  • Utilize computerized diagnostic scanners and OEM-specific diagnostic platforms to read fault codes, clear codes, log repair history and confirm fault resolution in accordance with diagnostic flow charts.
  • Follow standardized maintenance procedures and adhere to OEM technical bulletins, service manuals and safety protocols when performing repairs and adjustments, escalating complex faults to journeymen or supervisors.
  • Perform welding, cutting and basic fabrication tasks to repair brackets, frames, mounts and exhaust components while following shop fabrication standards and maintaining weld quality and safety.
  • Remove and install heavy components such as engines, transmissions and axles using hoists, cranes and engine stands while observing proper lifting procedures and equipment rigging protocols.
  • Support tire and wheel service activities including tire removal, mounting, balancing, valve stem replacement and wheel-end bearing inspection and adjustment for heavy trucks and trailers.
  • Maintain accurate parts consumption records, complete requisitions for replacement parts and verify part numbers against OEM specifications to prevent inventory errors and repair delays.
  • Participate in scheduled apprenticeship coursework, on-the-job training logs and competency checks; prepare for and complete required trade certifications and performance evaluations as part of the apprenticeship program.
  • Perform leak detection, pressure testing and cooling system services including radiator repair, thermostat replacement and coolant system flushes while documenting contaminant and corrosion findings.
  • Maintain shop cleanliness, tool organization and equipment calibration logs; return tools to designated storage, label parts, and ensure the shop meets safety and regulatory cleanliness standards.
  • Assist with roadside service and emergency repairs as assigned, performing safe triage, temporary repairs and documentation to get equipment back to shop for full repair.
  • Observe and implement environmental and hazardous waste protocols including proper disposal of oils, coolants, batteries and used filters in compliance with local and federal regulations.
  • Read and interpret wiring schematics, hydraulic diagrams, parts catalogs and service manuals to support accurate diagnosis and repair work under mentor supervision.
  • Support installation and calibration of vehicle telematics, sensors and auxiliary systems, ensuring accurate data capture for fleet management and preventive maintenance programs.
  • Help troubleshoot HVAC and cab comfort systems (heater cores, blower motors, A/C compressors, refrigerant charging) to maintain driver comfort and component reliability on long-haul and vocational vehicles.
  • Maintain apprentice training dossiers, record hours, course completions and mentor sign-offs to demonstrate competency progression toward journeyman status.
  • Communicate effectively with service advisors and fleet managers about repair status, estimated completion times and part lead-times to support transparent customer and fleet relationships.

Secondary Functions

  • Keep inventory levels of common consumables updated and assist with receiving, stocking and cycling parts and supplies to reduce shop downtime.
  • Assist in preparing vehicles for scheduled inspections and regulatory compliance audits by ensuring inspection items are complete and documented.
  • Support shop administration by entering work orders, parts usage and labor hours into the shop management system in a timely, accurate manner.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives such as 5S organization, lean workflows and technician efficiency programs to help optimize shop throughput.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED; basic coursework in mathematics, physics or vocational shop preferred.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate or coursework from a vocational/technical school in diesel technology, heavy equipment maintenance or automotive technology.
  • Completion of pre-apprenticeship diesel/mechanic programs or relevant college-level trade classes.
