Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Diagnose complex mechanical, hydraulic and electrical failures on excavators, wheel loaders, articulated trucks, dozers and other heavy mobile equipment using a combination of handheld diagnostic tools, telematics data, schematics and OEM service manuals to quickly identify root cause and repair strategy.
- Perform on-site diesel engine repairs and overhauls, including cylinder head service, piston and liner replacement, fuel injector diagnosis and replacement, turbocharger inspection and installation, and compression testing to restore engine performance.
- Troubleshoot, repair and rebuild hydraulic systems and components — including pumps, valves, motors, cylinders, hoses and fittings — ensuring correct flow, pressure and leak-free operation in accordance with OEM torque and seal specifications.
- Diagnose and repair transmission, torque converter and final drive assemblies, including performing fluid changes, clutch pack servicing, gear inspections and component rebuilds to return driveline and powertrain function.
- Conduct electrical system diagnostics and repairs, including troubleshooting wiring harnesses, sensors, ECM/ECU error codes, alternators, starters, lights and instrument clusters; perform module resets and software updates when required.
- Service and maintain HVAC, climate control and cab comfort systems, including compressor replacement, leak detection, refrigerant handling and cabin air flow troubleshooting to ensure operator safety and comfort.
- Perform preventative maintenance services and scheduled inspections per OEM and company checklists — change oils and filters, inspect brakes, steering, undercarriage and wear components, lubricate fittings, and update maintenance records to maximize equipment uptime.
- Complete complex on-site welding, fabrication and structural repairs using MIG/TIG and stick welding techniques to repair frames, mounts, linkages and attachment interfaces while maintaining dimensional integrity and safety.
- Execute roadside and remote-site emergency repairs under tight timelines, improvising safe temporary fixes when required and coordinating parts logistics to minimize equipment downtime.
- Operate mobile diagnostic laptops, tablets and telematics platforms to read fault codes, review machine historical data, upload calibrations and update service history while maintaining accurate digital job logs.
- Coordinate parts procurement and inventory control by identifying required OEM and aftermarket parts, placing orders through parts portals or vendors, and verifying receipt/fitment to complete repairs efficiently.
- Conduct post-repair testing and functional checks by operating equipment under load, verifying performance metrics, ensuring no secondary failures and confirming adherence to OEM torque and hydraulic settings.
- Maintain and calibrate precision tools, diagnostic equipment and torque instruments, ensuring all measurement devices are within calibration tolerances and documented per company procedures.
- Provide detailed service reports, repair estimates and change-order documentation to customers and dispatch, including labor/parts breakdowns, root cause analysis and recommended follow-up maintenance.
- Train and mentor junior technicians and apprentices in safe field service practices, troubleshooting methodologies, OEM repair procedures and best-practice documentation to elevate team capability.
- Ensure compliance with all workplace safety policies, PPE requirements, confined-space and lockout/tagout procedures, hazardous-material handling (fluids, refrigerants) and environmental regulations at each job site.
- Collaborate with service management and rental/fleet teams to prioritize service calls, schedule preventative maintenance windows and advise on lifecycle planning, component replacement timing and cost-effective rebuild options.
- Use hoists, cranes, forklifts and winches to safely remove and install heavy components on-site, following rigging best practices and lift plans to protect personnel and equipment.
- Troubleshoot and repair ancillary systems and attachments such as hydraulic breakers, grapples, augers and quick couplers — performing diagnostic checks, hydraulic flow adjustments and attachment re-certifications when needed.
- Support warranty claims by documenting failure evidence, capturing photos, completing required OEM paperwork and communicating findings to manufacturer reps to secure repair coverage when applicable.
- Maintain clean, organized service vehicles and tool inventories, ensuring mobile workshops are stocked with consumables, replacement parts and emergency repair kits to support high first-time-fix rates.
- Adhere to company timekeeping, expense reporting and service management systems to ensure accurate billing, SLA compliance and performance analytics.
Secondary Functions
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to streamline field repair processes, reduce travel time and improve first-time-fix rates through parts kitting and diagnostic protocol updates.
