Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform thorough on-site diagnostics and root-cause analysis of mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems using multimeters, pressure gauges, oscilloscopes, hydraulic flow testers, and manufacturer diagnostic software to isolate faults and recommend precise repairs.
  • Execute preventive maintenance service (PM) tasks per OEM schedules: oil and filter changes, fuel system servicing, hydraulic fluid and filter replacement, grease points, track/tire inspections, and overall machine lubrication to maximize uptime and warranty compliance.
  • Disassemble, repair, and reassemble major components such as diesel engines, turbochargers, transmissions, torque converters, final drives, hydraulic pumps, valves and cylinders, ensuring correct torque, seals, and clearances.
  • Troubleshoot and repair 12V/24V electrical systems, including starting/charging circuits, alternators, starters, wiring harnesses, relays, solenoids, sensors, and ECM/ECU recalibration; read and interpret wiring diagrams and CAN-bus diagnostics.
  • Service and rebuild hydraulic systems: identify and replace leaking hoses and fittings, repair or replace hydraulic pumps, valves and cylinders, pressure test systems, and verify proper system operation under load.
  • Use OEM diagnostic platforms, telematics portals, and machine controllers to read fault codes, update firmware, download event histories, and support remote troubleshooting and prognostics.
  • Perform fabrications and welds (MIG/TIG/Stick) to repair frames, brackets, linkages and attachments to safe and durable standards when aftermarket parts are not immediately available.
  • Install, adjust and certify attachments and implementations (buckets, thumbs, breakers, quick couplers, grapples) ensuring pin retention, linkage geometry, and hydraulic hookup integrity.
  • Conduct scheduled calibrations and sensor verifications (pressure, speed, position sensors) and adjust control parameters to restore OEM performance and safety functionality.
  • Respond to emergency breakdowns and participate in on-call rotations; travel to customer sites across assigned territories and work extended hours as required to restore critical equipment to operation.
  • Maintain detailed service records, inspection reports, timecards, electronic work orders and warranty paperwork in the company’s service management system for billing, compliance, and continuous improvement.
  • Maintain and manage parts inventory aboard the service truck — accurately stock commonly used seals, filters, hoses, fittings and fasteners — and place parts orders via parts management systems to minimize repeat site visits.
  • Advise customers on root causes and provide cost-effective repair options, estimate labor and parts needs, and present preventive recommendations to reduce future downtime and operating costs.
  • Perform leak detection, pressure testing and run-to-failure analysis for fluids and air systems, and recommend component life extensions or planned replacement based on severity and operational risk.
  • Implement and enforce PPE, lockout/tagout, LOTO, confined space, and other safety protocols for on-site repairs; conduct pre-job hazard assessments and maintain a perfect safety-first record.
  • Diagnose and perform engine tuning, fuel injection system service, injector replacement, turbocharger inspection and repairs to restore proper combustion, emissions, and fuel economy.
  • Support warranty and claim processes by compiling failure evidence, photos, time logs, and communicating with OEM technical reps to secure approvals and expedite parts replacement.
  • Perform pre-delivery inspections (PDI) and commissioning of new equipment, including software updates, operational checks, and operator orientation on safe use and basic maintenance.
  • Execute preventive and corrective maintenance on auxiliary systems such as air conditioning, heating, cab electronics, cameras, and illumination systems to ensure operator comfort and machine safety.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives: capture recurring failure trends, recommend design or maintenance changes, and contribute to tech bulletins or service advisories for the fleet.
  • Maintain DOT, company vehicle, and tool inventory compliance; perform daily vehicle inspections and ensure all tools and safety equipment are present, calibrated and functional.

Secondary Functions

  • Coordinate with parts, warehouse and procurement teams to expedite critical parts shortages and suggest alternatives or temporary field repairs to keep machines running.
  • Support sales and account managers with on-site technical expertise, demonstrations, machine walk-arounds, and technical scope for retrofit or upgrade proposals.
  • Mentor and coach junior technicians and apprentices in troubleshooting methodologies, safe work practices and OEM repair procedures.
  • Contribute to service cost controls by tracking hours, documenting efficient repair methods, and identifying reusable components or remanufactured alternatives.
  • Participate in regular technical training and manufacturer certification programs to maintain and expand brand-specific skills and factory warranties.
  • Assist in scheduled depot repairs or complex rebuilds at the shop when required, including disassembly and reassembly of large components under supervision.
  • Provide clear, professional communication to customers on job status, estimated completion times, and potential impacts to their operations.
  • Maintain machine telemetry subscriptions and ensure sensor/signal integrity to support remote monitoring and fleet management services.
  • Support environmental compliance by recovering, recycling, and disposing of oils, coolants, and other hazardous materials per regulations.
  • Contribute to digital transformation efforts by using mobile apps, electronic service manuals and cloud-based job reporting tools to drive faster invoicing and improved data quality.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced diesel engine diagnostics and repair (compression testing, fuel injection, turbocharger/service).
  • Hydraulic system diagnosis and repair including pumps, valves, cylinders, hoses and seals.
  • Electrical system troubleshooting: 12V/24V circuits, ECM/ECU fault code interpretation, CAN-bus and sensor diagnostics.

  • Basic shop machine skills: lathe, drill press, milling for simple part repairs and custom fittings.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
High school diploma or GED with relevant trade experience.

Preferred Education:
Vocational certificate, technical diploma, or associate degree in Diesel Technology, Heavy Equipment Technology, Mechanical Technology, or equivalent.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

3–5+ years of field service experience on heavy equipment with manufacturer-specific diagnostic experience and certifications.

Additional preferred qualifications: ASE/Diesel certifications, manufacturer factory technician certifications, OSHA 10 or 30, NCCER credentials, CDL (if driving heavy trailer), and demonstrated experience with remote diagnostics/telematics and warranty claim processing.
