Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Serve as the primary troubleshooter, meticulously diagnosing complex mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic system failures on a diverse range of heavy machinery, including excavators, dozers, loaders, and haul trucks.
  • Execute comprehensive preventative maintenance (PM) programs, performing detailed inspections, oil changes, lubrication, and filter replacements to proactively minimize unscheduled downtime and extend equipment lifespan.
  • Skillfully read and interpret complex technical manuals, hydraulic and electrical schematics, and service bulletins to guide repair procedures with precision.
  • Conduct complete overhauls and rebuilds of major components, such as diesel engines, transmissions, final drives, and hydraulic pumps, restoring them to OEM specifications.
  • Utilize advanced diagnostic software and laptops (e.g., CAT ET, John Deere Service Advisor, Cummins Insite) to interface with onboard computers, identify fault codes, and troubleshoot electronic control systems.
  • Perform skilled welding and fabrication using MIG, TIG, and Stick processes to repair cracks, reinforce structures, or create custom brackets and fittings as required.
  • Respond to urgent field service calls to perform on-site diagnostics and emergency repairs at construction sites or remote locations, often under demanding conditions.
  • Operate and rigorously test repaired equipment to verify that all systems are functioning correctly, performance meets operational standards, and all safety features are engaged.
  • Maintain meticulous, accurate, and timely records of all service work, parts usage, and labor hours within a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Disassemble and reassemble large, complex equipment components, including undercarriages, booms, sticks, and various attachments, using proper rigging and lifting techniques.
  • Perform critical safety inspections on equipment, ensuring compliance with all company and MSHA/OSHA regulations before releasing it for operation.
  • Manage the parts procurement process, accurately identifying and ordering necessary components to complete jobs efficiently while maintaining an organized parts inventory.
  • Install, set up, and commission new pieces of equipment, ensuring they are properly assembled and calibrated for immediate deployment.
  • Provide mentorship and on-the-job training to apprentice mechanics, sharing invaluable technical knowledge, safety practices, and diagnostic strategies.
  • Diagnose and repair powertrain systems, including torque converters, differentials, and planetary gears, ensuring proper alignment and function.
  • Service and repair advanced climate control (HVAC) systems within equipment cabs to ensure operator comfort and safety.
  • Address and repair air and hydraulic brake systems, ensuring the safe stopping capability of heavy-duty vehicles and machinery.
  • Calibrate machine control systems (e.g., GPS, laser guidance) after repairs to ensure operational accuracy.
  • Conduct undercarriage inspections and repairs, including track tensioning, roller replacement, and sprocket wear analysis.
  • Prepare detailed cost and time estimates for complex repairs to assist management in decision-making regarding equipment lifecycle.

  • Evaluate the condition of damaged or aging equipment to provide expert recommendations on the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of repairs versus replacement.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced Diesel Engine Diagnostics: Deep proficiency in troubleshooting and repairing major diesel engine platforms (e.g., Caterpillar, Cummins, Komatsu, John Deere, Volvo).
  • Hydraulic System Expertise: The ability to read complex hydraulic schematics and diagnose issues in open and closed-loop systems, including pumps, motors, and electro-hydraulic valves.
