Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Thoroughly prepare a wide range of heavy equipment surfaces for painting by removing old paint, rust, grease, and dirt using methods such as sandblasting, pressure washing, steam cleaning, and chemical stripping.
  • Meticulously perform bodywork and surface repairs, including filling dents, grinding welds, and applying body filler, putty, and primers to create a smooth and uniform surface ready for coating.
  • Carefully mask, tape, and cover all non-painted surfaces, components, and sensitive parts such as glass, chrome, and hydraulic fittings to protect them from overspray and damage.
  • Precisely mix paints, epoxies, primers, and other coating materials to the correct color, consistency, and viscosity according to manufacturer specifications and technical data sheets.
  • Utilize computerized paint mixing and color matching systems to ensure accurate color formulation and consistency across multiple pieces of equipment or components.
  • Expertly operate various types of spray painting equipment, including High Volume Low Pressure (HVLP), conventional, and airless spray systems, to apply primers, base coats, and topcoats.
  • Apply multiple layers of coatings to achieve the required thickness (mil build) and durability, ensuring proper adhesion between layers for long-lasting protection.
  • Perform detailed finishing work, including wet sanding, buffing, and polishing, to remove imperfections and achieve a high-gloss, showroom-quality finish as required.
  • Accurately apply decals, branding, and safety stencils to finished equipment according to blueprints, customer specifications, and industry regulations.
  • Conduct comprehensive quality control inspections on all finished work to check for defects such as runs, sags, orange peel, and improper coverage, performing touch-ups as necessary.
  • Read and interpret work orders, blueprints, and technical specifications to understand the scope of work, required materials, and finishing standards for each project.
  • Set up, maintain, and troubleshoot a variety of paint application equipment, including spray guns, pumps, hoses, and paint booths, to ensure optimal performance.
  • Operate and maintain sandblasting equipment and booths, ensuring proper abrasive media levels and dust collection system functionality.
  • Manage the baking and curing process for painted parts, monitoring temperatures and cure times within industrial ovens to ensure a hard, durable finish.
  • Select the appropriate coatings, such as urethanes, epoxies, and enamels, based on the equipment's intended use, environmental exposure, and substrate material.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, including the paint booth and mixing room, in compliance with company policies and environmental regulations.
  • Diligently follow all safety protocols, including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as respirators, safety glasses, and protective suits.
  • Manage and document the inventory of paints, solvents, abrasives, and other supplies, communicating with the supervisor to reorder materials as needed.
  • Properly handle, label, and dispose of hazardous waste materials, such as solvents and used paint, in accordance with EPA and local environmental guidelines.
  • Collaborate effectively with welders, mechanics, and other technicians to coordinate the flow of work and ensure equipment is ready for the painting process at the appropriate time.
  • Document all work performed on job travelers or in a computer system, recording materials used and time spent on each stage of the project for accurate job costing.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and training programs to stay current with new painting techniques, materials, and equipment technology.
  • Assist in the movement of heavy equipment and large components in and out of the paint shop using forklifts or overhead cranes, following all safe operating procedures.
