Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform comprehensive diagnostics and root-cause analysis on diesel engines, transmissions, final drives, and driveline systems using computerized diagnostic tools, multimeters, and manufacturer-specific software to restore equipment to service quickly and accurately.
  • Conduct scheduled preventive maintenance and inspection programs (PMs) for a mixed fleet of excavators, loaders, dozers, graders, articulated trucks, and forklifts, following OEM service intervals and documented checklists to maximize uptime.
  • Disassemble, rebuild, and reassemble components such as cylinder heads, fuel injection pumps, turbochargers, transmissions, clutches, and hydraulic pumps to OEM tolerances, using precision measuring instruments and service manuals.
  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain hydraulic systems including cylinders, pumps, valves, hoses, and fittings; perform hydraulic system troubleshooting, pressure testing, and contamination control to prevent premature failures.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical systems, including 12V/24V circuits, alternators, starter motors, CAN bus/ECU issues, sensor replacements, wiring harness repairs, and connector/pin repairs using schematics and electrical test equipment.
  • Perform engine tune-ups, fuel system servicing, injector testing and replacement, emission system diagnostics, and exhaust aftertreatment maintenance to ensure compliance with environmental and emissions standards.
  • Troubleshoot and repair cooling systems, radiators, thermostats, water pumps, and fan drives; implement cooling system diagnostics to prevent overheating and extend engine life.
  • Execute major overhauls and mid-life rebuilds of diesel engines and major assemblies, coordinating with parts procurement, estimating labor hours, and ensuring correct torques and clearances are met during reassembly.
  • Fabricate and weld metal components, brackets, and repair plates using MIG/TIG/stick welding techniques and fabrication tools to restore structural integrity and custom-mount accessories or safety equipment.
  • Perform brake system maintenance and diagnostics on air, hydraulic, and mixed systems, including adjustment, line replacement, compressor service, and testing of fail-safe systems.
  • Conduct road tests and operational validation after repairs to verify that performance, controls, hydraulics, and safety systems meet specifications before returning equipment to operation.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, repair logs, parts usage, and labor time entries in a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) or ERP to support traceability, warranty claims, and fleet planning.
  • Order, stage, and manage parts inventory in coordination with parts clerks and suppliers, verifying part numbers against OEM catalogs, expediting critical components to minimize equipment downtime.
  • Work closely with operations, safety, and equipment managers to prioritize repairs, provide technical input for equipment replacement decisions, and report recurring failures for root-cause analysis and reliability improvement.
  • Provide technical support and mentorship to junior technicians and apprentices, delivering on-the-job training in safety procedures, diagnostic techniques, and best practices for heavy equipment repair.
  • Implement and enforce shop safety standards including lockout/tagout, confined space procedures, proper use of lifting equipment (hoists, cranes, lifts), PPE use, and hazardous materials handling to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Inspect and certify heavy equipment attachments, quick couplers, and lifting points for wear and compliance with regulatory and company safety standards, documenting findings and repairs performed.
  • Calibrate and maintain shop tools, test equipment, and diagnostic instruments; ensure calibration records and service intervals are up to date to preserve diagnostic accuracy and safety.
  • Support warranty claim documentation and communication with OEM representatives, preparing detailed failure reports, supporting photos, and repair invoices to facilitate warranty recovery when applicable.
  • Respond to after-hours or emergency service calls for critical on-site repairs as required, including mobile troubleshooting and temporary repairs to enable safe transport or immediate operation.
  • Assist in shop layout optimization, workflow improvements, and 5S/lean initiatives to increase throughput, reduce rework, and improve parts and tool accessibility.
  • Perform environmental compliance activities such as fluid containment, recycling of oils and filters, and proper disposal of hazardous materials to meet local and federal regulations.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist parts and procurement teams with vendor research, cross-referencing part numbers, and identifying aftermarket alternatives when OEM parts are delayed.
  • Participate in equipment acceptance inspections for new and used units, noting discrepancies and coordinating warranty or repair actions with vendors.
  • Train equipment operators on basic pre-start inspection routines and reporting procedures to improve first-line detection of developing issues.
  • Support continuous improvement projects by providing hands-on feedback on recurring failure modes and repair time drivers to reliability engineers.
  • Contribute to monthly maintenance reporting, KPI tracking (MTBF, MTTR, downtime), and forecasting of parts and labor needs for budget planning.
  • Help maintain shop cleanliness, tool crib organization, and safe storage of hazardous materials in compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in toolbox talks, safety meetings, and refresher training on new equipment, updated OEM service bulletins, or regulatory changes.
  • Assist with fabrication of specialty tools, adaptors, and test fixtures to enable efficient repair and diagnostic work on unique or aging equipment.
  • Support fleet retirement and disposal processes by preparing equipment for sale or decommissioning, including fluid draining and component removal per environmental requirements.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
