Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform complex diagnostics on diesel engines, powertrains, and electrical and hydraulic systems to accurately identify malfunctions and failures on a wide range of heavy construction machinery.
  • Execute comprehensive repairs and preventative maintenance services in accordance with manufacturer standards, including engine overhauls, transmission rebuilds, and hydraulic component replacements.
  • Read and interpret complex technical manuals, blueprints, and hydraulic and electrical schematics to guide troubleshooting and repair procedures effectively.
  • Utilize advanced diagnostic software and tools (e.g., CAT ET, John Deere Service Advisor, Komatsu Komtrax) to interface with machine control modules, retrieve fault codes, and perform system calibrations.
  • Respond promptly to field service calls, traveling to customer job sites to perform on-site diagnostics, emergency repairs, and scheduled maintenance to minimize equipment downtime.
  • Complete detailed and accurate service reports, time logs, and parts requisitions in a timely manner using company software systems.
  • Conduct thorough pre-delivery inspections (PDI) and post-repair quality control tests on new and serviced equipment to ensure it meets all operational and safety specifications.
  • Perform skilled welding and fabrication to repair or modify equipment frames, buckets, and other structural components as needed.
  • Rebuild and recondition major components, attachments, and systems to extend the life of the equipment and provide cost-effective solutions.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment, strictly adhering to all company, OSHA, and MSHA safety regulations and procedures.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with customers, dispatchers, and service managers regarding equipment status, repair estimates, and project timelines.
  • Manage and maintain the inventory of parts and tools on a service truck to ensure readiness for a wide variety of field repairs.
  • Assemble and set up new equipment according to manufacturer guidelines, ensuring all systems are functional before delivery to the customer.
  • Provide expert technical advice and recommendations to customers on proper equipment operation and preventative maintenance practices.
  • Perform complete machine inspections and generate detailed reports outlining the condition of the equipment and recommending necessary repairs or component replacements.
  • Safely operate various types of heavy equipment to test functionality post-repair and to move machinery within the shop or on a job site.
  • Keep up-to-date with the latest industry technology, new equipment models, and advanced repair techniques by attending factory-sponsored training and certification courses.
  • Troubleshoot and repair complex after-treatment systems (DPF, DEF, SCR) to ensure compliance with emission standards.
  • Manage warranty repair claims by properly documenting failures, labor, and parts used, and submitting them to the manufacturer for reimbursement.
  • Order, receive, and return parts efficiently, ensuring the correct components are sourced for each job to maintain repair workflow.
  • Disassemble equipment and components to inspect parts for wear, using micrometers, calipers, and other precision measuring instruments.

Secondary Functions

  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to apprentice technicians to foster skill development within the team.
  • Assist in managing shop tool inventory and report needs for new or replacement equipment.
  • Participate in company safety meetings and contribute to the continuous improvement of safety protocols.
  • Maintain service vehicle readiness, including inventory checks, cleanliness, and routine maintenance.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced proficiency in diagnosing and repairing diesel engine and fuel systems.
  • Deep expertise in troubleshooting and repairing complex hydraulic systems, including reading schematics.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical systems, electronic controls, and CAN bus communication networks.
  • Experience with powertrain components, including transmissions, final drives, and differentials.
  • Proficiency in welding (Stick/MIG) and metal fabrication techniques.
  • Competency with computer-based diagnostic software and service information systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, engineering blueprints, and schematics.
