Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Operate a diverse range of heavy construction equipment, including but not limited to excavators, bulldozers, front-end loaders, graders, and compactors, in a safe and productive manner.
Perform bulk and fine grading operations to achieve specified elevations and contours as indicated by blueprints, survey stakes, and GPS guidance systems.
Excavate and backfill trenches, foundations, and other structures, ensuring the stability of surrounding ground and the safety of any personnel in the vicinity.
Maneuver and position heavy materials, such as pipes, precast concrete sections, and structural steel, with precision and in coordination with ground crews.
Conduct thorough pre-operational and post-operational inspections on all machinery, meticulously checking fluid levels, hydraulic systems, tracks/tires, and safety features.
Adhere strictly to all company, state, and federal safety regulations, including OSHA and/or MSHA standards, to maintain a hazard-free work environment.
Interpret and execute plans from blueprints, sketches, and verbal instructions to ensure work is completed to project specifications.
Load and unload earth, rock, and other construction materials onto and from haul trucks, ensuring loads are secure and balanced.
Systematically clear and prepare land for construction projects, including the removal of trees, debris, and existing structures using appropriate equipment attachments.
Perform routine and preventative maintenance on equipment, such as lubricating fittings, cleaning tracks, and replacing worn cutting edges or teeth to ensure optimal performance.
Communicate effectively with foremen, superintendents, and ground personnel using hand signals and two-way radios to coordinate tasks and ensure site safety.
Monitor equipment performance during operation, identifying and reporting any malfunctions, unusual noises, or mechanical issues to the maintenance team immediately.
Operate compaction equipment, such as rollers, to compact soil, asphalt, or other materials to specified densities required by engineering standards.
Understand and manage the equipment’s capabilities and limitations, making informed decisions about its use in various weather and ground conditions.
Assist in setting up and dismantling equipment on the job site, ensuring proper and safe assembly and disassembly procedures are followed.
Maintain a clean and organized equipment cab, ensuring all controls are free from obstruction and visibility is clear at all times.
Document and maintain accurate daily records of hours worked, equipment usage, fuel consumption, and maintenance performed.
Navigate challenging terrain and operate machinery in close proximity to existing structures, utilities, and other obstacles without causing damage.
Participate actively in daily job site safety briefings (toolbox talks) and contribute to identifying and mitigating potential risks.
Control machine operations to slope and grade banks, dig channels, and perform other complex earthmoving tasks with a high degree of precision.
