Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Utilize a variety of powered and manual tools, including electric/gas hedge trimmers, shears, loppers, and handsaws, to precisely shape and maintain hedges, shrubs, and topiaries.
Perform formative and maintenance pruning according to horticultural best practices to promote dense, healthy growth and achieve specific aesthetic outcomes.
Assess the health and condition of woody plants, identifying signs of pest infestation, disease, or environmental stress.
Implement appropriate integrated pest management (IPM) strategies and apply prescribed treatments, fertilizers, and soil amendments to ensure plant vitality.
Execute intricate and formal trimming on hedges of varying species, sizes, and shapes, ensuring clean lines, level tops, and consistent surfaces.
Operate light machinery such as aerial lifts or mobile elevated work platforms (MEWPs) for trimming tall hedges, following all safety certifications and protocols.
Interpret landscape design plans or client requests to create or restore specific hedge shapes, patterns, or topiary forms.
Conduct seasonal pruning tasks, including rejuvenation pruning on overgrown shrubs, to encourage new growth and maintain the plant's intended size and scale.
Manage all debris created during trimming operations, using blowers, rakes, and tarps to ensure a clean and tidy site upon completion of work.
Regularly inspect, clean, sharpen, and perform routine maintenance on all tools and equipment to ensure optimal performance and safe operation.
Adhere to and enforce all company and industry safety standards, including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, hearing protection, and gloves.
Provide expert advice to clients or property managers on hedge selection, planting, and long-term care strategies.
Collaborate with other landscape and grounds team members to ensure cohesive and high-quality results across the entire property.
Monitor watering schedules and soil moisture levels for hedges and shrubs, making adjustments as needed based on weather and plant requirements.
Perform root pruning and install root barriers when necessary to protect infrastructure like walkways and foundations.
Skillfully taper hedges to ensure sunlight penetrates to the base, preventing "legginess" and promoting foliage density from top to bottom.
Carry out large-scale hedge reductions and renovations, carefully bringing overgrown plants back to a manageable and attractive size over time.
Plant new hedges and shrubs, ensuring proper spacing, soil preparation, and planting techniques for successful establishment.
Document work activities, including services performed, materials used, and time on site, for accurate record-keeping and billing.
Respond to weather-related damage, performing corrective pruning to repair broken branches and restore the structure of affected plants.

Secondary Functions

Assist with broader landscape maintenance duties during off-peak pruning seasons, such as mulching, planting annuals/perennials, and general garden cleanup.
