Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct daily health checks and walk-throughs of the entire herd, meticulously observing animal behavior to identify early signs of illness, injury, or distress.
  • Execute comprehensive herd health programs, including administering vaccinations, medications, and treatments as prescribed by the veterinarian or established farm protocols.
  • Champion and implement a low-stress animal handling philosophy for all movements, sorting, and treatments to ensure animal welfare and safety.
  • Manage all facets of the reproductive program, including accurate heat detection, performing artificial insemination (AI), and assisting with pregnancy checks.
  • Provide critical assistance during birthing/calving/farrowing, ensuring the safety of both mother and newborn, and providing immediate post-natal care like ensuring colostrum intake.
  • Operate, maintain, and perform basic repairs on a variety of farm equipment, including tractors, skid steers, TMR mixers, and manure handling systems.
  • Prepare and distribute precise feed rations according to nutritional plans, ensuring all animal groups receive the correct diet and have constant access to fresh water.
  • Maintain exceptionally accurate and timely digital and written records for all health events, treatments, breeding activities, births, and animal movements using herd management software (e.g., DairyComp, BoviSync).
  • Uphold and enforce strict biosecurity protocols across the facility to prevent the introduction and spread of disease, safeguarding the health of the entire herd.
  • Perform routine animal husbandry tasks such as hoof trimming, dehorning, tagging, and castrating in a safe and humane manner.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and functionality of all animal housing facilities, including bedding stalls, scraping alleyways, and managing ventilation systems to ensure a comfortable environment.
  • Collect various biological samples, such as milk, blood, or tissue, for diagnostic testing, genetic analysis, or quality control purposes.
  • Monitor inventory levels of crucial supplies, including medical supplies, feed ingredients, and semen, and communicate needs to the Herd Manager.
  • Assist veterinarians and other consultants during farm visits by preparing animals, providing herd records, and helping with procedures.
  • Ensure all animal welfare standards and farm-specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are followed without exception.
  • Monitor and manage environmental systems within barns, adjusting curtains, fans, and misters to mitigate heat stress or protect from cold.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and report any maintenance issues with facilities or equipment to prevent downtime and ensure a safe working environment.
  • Manage the care and growth of youngstock, from newborns to weaning, overseeing their unique nutritional and health requirements.
  • Sort and group animals for various purposes such as health checks, breeding, sales, or movement to different production stages.
  • Contribute to a positive team environment by communicating effectively with coworkers and managers, sharing observations and insights for herd improvement.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Animal Health Assessment: Proven ability to identify common diseases, lameness, and other health issues in livestock through visual observation.
  • Artificial Insemination (AI): Proficiency or certification in AI techniques for the specific species (e.g., cattle, swine).
  • Livestock Handling: Expertise in low-stress handling techniques to move and manage animals safely and calmly.
  • Farm Equipment Operation: Competent and safe operation of tractors, skid steers, feed wagons, and other agricultural machinery.
  • Herd Management Software: Experience using platforms like DairyComp 305, BoviSync, PigCHAMP, or similar systems for data entry and reporting.
  • Reproductive Management: Strong knowledge of heat detection, estrus synchronization protocols, and the overall reproductive cycle.
  • Calving/Birthing Assistance: Experience in assisting with difficult births and providing immediate neonatal care.
  • Medication Administration: Knowledge of proper injection techniques (IM, Sub-Q), oral drenching, and calculating dosages.
  • Basic Mechanical Aptitude: Ability to perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on farm equipment and facilities.
  • Feed & Nutrition: Understanding of basic livestock nutritional requirements and experience with mixing and delivering Total Mixed Rations (TMR).
