Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct dynamic and historically accurate interpretive tours and educational programs for diverse audiences, including school groups, adults, and families, adapting content and delivery style to meet their needs.
  • Research, develop, and master historical content related to the site, including key figures, events, architecture, and cultural significance, to ensure accuracy and depth of knowledge.
  • Engage visitors in a compelling and interactive manner, utilizing effective storytelling techniques, object-based learning, demonstrations, and hands-on activities to bring history to life.
  • Provide exceptional customer service by warmly greeting all visitors, providing site orientation, and offering information about amenities, schedules, and special events.
  • Confidently and accurately answer a wide range of visitor questions, providing additional context and resources when appropriate to enhance their understanding.
  • Manage group tours and field trips, from coordinating check-in and logistics to delivering age-appropriate, curriculum-relevant content.
  • Promote museum membership, upcoming programs, and special exhibitions to visitors, encouraging repeat visitation and deeper community engagement.
  • Monitor visitor activity throughout the site to ensure the safety and security of the public as well as the preservation of historic structures, artifacts, and landscapes.
  • Operate point-of-sale (POS) systems for admissions, retail sales, and special event ticketing, ensuring accurate cash handling and transaction processing.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor, often requiring the proper wear and care of a period-appropriate costume or a standard uniform.

Secondary Functions

  • Contribute to the development of new tour scripts, educational materials, and interpretive programs in collaboration with curatorial, collections, and education staff.
  • Assist with the daily opening and closing procedures for the historic site, including securing buildings, managing alarm systems, and preparing public spaces for visitors.
  • Enforce site rules and regulations in a polite, firm, and professional manner to protect the collection and ensure a positive experience for all guests.
  • Assist with the setup, execution, and breakdown of special events, private rentals, workshops, and public programs held at the site.
  • Perform light cleaning and tidying tasks in exhibit areas, public spaces, and restrooms to maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for all.
  • Promptly report any maintenance issues, safety hazards, or security concerns to the Site Supervisor or appropriate personnel according to established protocols.
  • Provide guidance and assistance during emergency situations, such as medical incidents or building evacuations, by following established safety procedures.
  • Gather formal and informal visitor feedback to help the organization assess program effectiveness and identify opportunities to improve the visitor experience.
  • Stay current on best practices in historical interpretation, museum education, and visitor engagement through professional development and independent learning.
  • Operate and troubleshoot basic audio-visual equipment used for presentations, films, and interactive exhibits.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
