Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Design and implement bespoke learning plans and tutoring strategies tailored to each student's unique academic needs, learning style, and personal goals in subjects like World History, U.S. History, and European History.
  • Deliver engaging and effective one-on-one or small group tutoring sessions, clarifying complex historical events, themes, and chronological sequences.
  • Provide comprehensive support for homework assignments, essays, research papers, and long-term projects, from brainstorming and outlining to final proofreading.
  • Teach students how to analyze and interpret primary and secondary source documents, identifying bias, context, and historical significance.
  • Guide students in developing strong argumentative writing skills, including crafting a clear thesis statement, structuring persuasive essays, and using evidence effectively.
  • Prepare students rigorously for major examinations, including AP (US, World, European), IB, SAT II, and final exams, by reviewing content and teaching test-taking strategies.
  • Foster critical thinking skills by encouraging students to ask probing questions, consider multiple perspectives, and draw connections between past events and present-day issues.
  • Create and utilize a rich variety of supplementary instructional materials, such as timelines, visual aids, custom study guides, and practice assessments to reinforce learning.
  • Administer initial diagnostic assessments to accurately gauge a student's foundational knowledge and identify specific areas requiring improvement.
  • Offer detailed, constructive feedback on student writing, focusing on argumentation, clarity, use of evidence, and correct citation formatting (e.g., Chicago, MLA).
  • Cultivate a positive, encouraging, and supportive learning atmosphere that builds student confidence and reduces academic anxiety.
  • Instruct students on effective and sustainable study habits, including advanced note-taking techniques, time management, and research methodologies.
  • Adapt teaching methodologies and communication styles to effectively connect with students from diverse backgrounds and with varying learning abilities.
  • Stay current with national and state curriculum standards, as well as the specific requirements of AP and IB History courses.
  • Guide students through the entire research process, from formulating a research question to evaluating sources for credibility and avoiding plagiarism.
