Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate and meticulously maintain complex holographic recording systems, including high-power lasers, spatial light modulators (SLMs), and precision optical mounts.
  • Perform precise alignment, calibration, and characterization of optical components and subsystems to meet stringent performance specifications for holographic mastering.
  • Execute multi-step photolithography processes, including photoresist coating, soft/hard baking, UV exposure, and chemical development in a cleanroom environment.
  • Manage the preparation and handling of specialized photosensitive materials and chemical solutions, adhering to all safety and disposal protocols.
  • Conduct thin-film deposition using physical vapor deposition (PVD) or chemical vapor deposition (CVD) systems to create reflective or protective layers on substrates.
  • Perform rigorous quality control and metrology inspections on holographic masters and replicas using tools such as atomic force microscopes (AFM), scanning electron microscopes (SEM), and profilometers.
  • Analyze optical performance of finished holographic elements using interferometers, spectrometers, and custom-built optical test benches to measure diffraction efficiency and image quality.
  • Document all process steps, experimental parameters, and measurement results with exceptional detail in lab notebooks and digital manufacturing execution systems (MES).
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose issues with laser systems, optical setups, and processing equipment to minimize downtime and maintain production schedules.
  • Collaborate closely with optical engineers and scientists to refine fabrication processes, provide critical feedback on design for manufacturability, and assist in developing next-generation products.
  • Maintain a pristine Class 100/1000 cleanroom environment, including performing regular cleaning, monitoring particle counts, and enforcing gowning procedures.
  • Operate and program automated replication equipment for mass production of holograms, such as embossing or casting machinery.
  • Assemble and integrate holographic components into larger optical systems or final products, such as heads-up displays (HUDs) or AR/VR headsets.
  • Develop and refine Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all critical fabrication, testing, and equipment maintenance tasks.
  • Characterize laser beam properties, including power, profile, and stability, to ensure consistent and high-quality holographic recordings.
  • Manage inventory levels of critical optical components, chemicals, and substrates, and coordinate with procurement for timely reordering.
  • Participate in root cause analysis investigations for process deviations or product failures, contributing to corrective and preventive action (CAPA) plans.
  • Assist in the design and construction of custom optical test fixtures and jigs required for unique characterization needs.
  • Prepare and process glass or polymer substrates, including cleaning, cutting, and surface treatment, to ensure optimal adhesion and optical clarity.
  • Uphold and champion a strong safety culture within the lab, particularly concerning laser safety, chemical handling, and high-voltage equipment.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Holographic Recording: Deep, hands-on experience with various holographic recording setups (e.g., Denisyuk, Fourier, rainbow) and the principles of interference and diffraction.
  • Laser Operation & Safety: Proficiency in operating and maintaining CW and pulsed laser systems (e.g., Argon-ion, HeNe, Nd:YAG, diode lasers) and certified knowledge of laser safety protocols (LSO experience is a plus).
  • Cleanroom Protocol: Extensive experience working in a controlled cleanroom environment (Class 100/ISO 5 or better), including proper gowning and contamination control procedures.
  • Optical Alignment: A high degree of skill in aligning complex free-space optical systems using components like lenses, mirrors, beam splitters, and spatial filters.
  • Thin-Film Deposition: Practical experience with vacuum deposition systems such as e-beam evaporators or magnetron sputtering tools (PVD).
  • Photolithography: Hands-on expertise in the complete photoresist process chain: spin coating, baking, exposure (contact or projection), and wet/dry etching.
  • Optical Metrology: Proficiency with characterization tools such as interferometers (e.g., Zygo, Fizeau), profilometers, spectrophotometers, and ellipsometers.
  • Microscopy: Experience using high-magnification inspection tools, including Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEM) and Atomic Force Microscopes (AFM), for surface analysis.
  • Vacuum Systems: Strong understanding and operational knowledge of high-vacuum pumps, chambers, and gauges.
  • Data Analysis Software: Familiarity with software like LabVIEW, MATLAB, or Python for controlling experiments, acquiring data, and performing analysis.
