The HomeGoods Merchandise Associate is responsible for ensuring that the sales floor is visually appealing, fully stocked, and operationally compliant to maximize sales and deliver a best-in-class shopping experience. This role executes planograms, processes incoming shipments, performs cycle counts, completes pricing and markdowns, supports loss prevention, and provides friendly customer service. Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute daily merchandising tasks to maintain on-floor product availability, including replenishing shelves, rotating stock, pulling forward inventory, and re-merchandising displays to ensure planogram fidelity and maximize visual appeal.
  • Receive, inspect, and process incoming shipments using handheld scanners and inventory systems; verify quantities, check for damage, label products, and stage items for rapid floor placement to meet sales trends and promotional windows.
  • Implement and maintain planograms and floor sets precisely as directed by corporate merchandising and store leadership, ensuring accurate product facings, signage placement, and category organization to drive conversion.
  • Complete price changes, markdowns, and clearance ticketing accurately and in a timely manner, following markdown directives and ensuring all reduced pricing is reflected on shelves, hand-held devices, and POS systems.
  • Maintain accurate inventory levels through daily replenishment, backroom organization, staging for seasonal resets, and prompt movement of stock from receiving to sales floor to minimize out-of-stocks and lost sales.
  • Conduct routine cycle counts and inventory audits; reconcile discrepancies between physical counts and system records, document variances, and escalate recurring inventory issues to management for root-cause analysis.
  • Assist customers on the sales floor with product location, detailed merchandising knowledge, gift guidance, and after-sale questions; deliver friendly, solution-oriented customer service that aligns with brand standards.
  • Set up seasonal displays, promotional endcaps, and special event fixtures according to visual merchandising directives and promotional calendars to create high-impact presentation and increase average transaction value.
  • Operate point-of-sale (POS) systems for customer transactions, process exchanges and returns according to store policy, and support cash handling and register operations when needed.
  • Track and report merchandising KPIs such as on-shelf availability, planogram compliance percentage, shrink/loss metrics, and speed of receiving-to-floor processing to help store leadership meet sales and margin goals.
  • Support inventory control and loss prevention efforts by following store security procedures, conducting spot checks, addressing shoplifting or suspicious activity, and maintaining proper backroom organization to reduce shrink.
  • Perform regular housekeeping and safety checks across sales floor and backroom areas—ensuring aisles are clear, merchandise is secured, safety tags are applied, and heavy items are stored safely to comply with OSHA and store safety policies.
  • Collaborate with store buyers, category managers, and cross-functional teams to provide feedback on product performance, customer preferences, and inventory trends to inform replenishment and future buys.
  • Prepare and execute store resets and visual refreshes during seasonal transitions or as part of corporate initiatives, coordinating with other associates to complete tasks within tight deadlines while maintaining sales coverage.
  • Price and label bulk items, furniture, or fragile home dĂ©cor pieces following corporate pricing standards and product handling guidelines to ensure consistent customer experience and pricing accuracy.
  • Manage special orders, layaway, or cross-store transfers by coordinating with inventory systems and store leadership to fulfill customer requests while optimizing inventory flow and reducing lead time.
  • Maintain and operate handheld devices, RF scanners, and inventory management software correctly; troubleshoot basic device issues and report system irregularities to management for resolution.
  • Train and mentor new merchandise associates on merchandising procedures, safety practices, and store standards to build a high-performing team and ensure consistent execution.
  • Execute shrink control initiatives, including receipt reconciliation, suspicious transaction monitoring, and participation in inventory investigations to protect assets and maintain margins.
  • Assist with price audits and promotional compliance checks to validate that advertised or promotional price points are correctly implemented across the sales floor and at checkout.
  • Coordinate with receiving and logistics partners for large furniture deliveries, customer pickup scheduling, and proper documentation to ensure timely and accurate fulfillment.
  • Prioritize and manage competing tasks—receiving, merchandising, customer assistance, and housekeeping—to meet daily objectives while maintaining high-quality execution and customer satisfaction.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc merchandising projects such as category resets, fixture repairs, signage creation, and assembly of display units to improve visual standards and operational flow.
  • Contribute to weekly sales and inventory reports by providing on-floor observations and reconciliation notes that help management refine ordering cadence and promotional timing.

  • Act as a point of contact for third-party vendors and merchandising contractors during resets and installations to ensure correct execution and adherence to store policies.
  • Support store sustainability and recycling initiatives by properly disposing of packaging materials and coordinating donation or clearance procedures for damaged or discontinued goods.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Planogram execution and visual merchandising implementation with strong attention to layout, product facings, and signage placement.
  • Receiving, inspection, and processing of shipments using RF scanners and inventory management systems (handheld devices, WMS familiarity).
  • Inventory control techniques including cycle counting, discrepancy reconciliation, and backroom organization.
  • POS operation and basic cash handling experience, including processing returns, exchanges, and special orders.
  • Accurate pricing, markdown execution, ticketing, and promotional compliance.
  • Familiarity with loss prevention practices, shrink reduction strategies, and secure handling of high-value merchandise.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED (required).

Preferred Education:

  • Associate degree or coursework in Retail Management, Business, Visual Merchandising, or related field (preferred).
