🎯 Role Definition

A Honey Technician is the primary custodian of our bee colonies and a steward of the honey production process. This role is a unique blend of animal husbandry, agricultural science, and skilled craftsmanship. The technician is fundamentally responsible for the day-to-day management of apiaries, ensuring the health, strength, and productivity of our bee hives. The position's duties follow the rhythm of the seasons, from building up colonies in the spring and managing them through the summer honey flow, to harvesting, processing, and preparing the bees for winter. This is a physically demanding, field-based role that requires resilience, a meticulous work ethic, and a genuine passion for apiculture and the natural environment.

Typical Career Path

Entry Point From:

  • Agricultural or Farm Hand
  • Horticulture Technician
  • Recent Graduate of an Apiculture or Agriculture Program

Advancement To:

  • Senior Honey Technician / Apiary Team Lead
  • Apiary Manager
  • Head Beekeeper / Operations Manager

Lateral Moves:

  • Pollination Services Coordinator
  • Quality Control Technician (Honey Processing)
  • Beekeeper-Educator or Trainer

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive hive inspections to meticulously assess colony health, brood patterns, population strength, and food stores (honey and pollen) to determine hive viability and needs.
  • Systematically implement Integrated Pest Management (IPM) protocols, including the identification, monitoring, and treatment of pests and diseases like Varroa mites, small hive beetles, and brood diseases, ensuring adherence to best practices.
  • Perform hive manipulations मौसम-appropriately, including making splits and nucleus colonies for apiary expansion, and combining weak colonies to improve survival rates.
  • Actively manage queen bee health, which includes identifying failing queens, culling unproductive or overly defensive colonies, and skillfully introducing new, reared, or purchased queens.

  • Execute the timely supering of hives to provide ample space for honey storage during nectar flows, preventing swarming and maximizing potential yield.
  • Harvest full honey supers from apiary sites, operating with care to minimize stress on the bees and disruption to the colony.
  • Safely transport heavy supers from field locations to the central extraction facility, often navigating rural or unpaved terrain.
  • Operate, clean, and maintain honey extraction equipment, including uncappers, centrifugal extractors, pumps, and sump systems, to ensure efficiency and hygiene.
  • Manage the raw honey post-extraction, including straining, settling, and warming processos to prepare it for packing, while preserving its natural quality.
  • Assemble, maintain, and repair all beekeeping equipment, including hive bodies, frames, bottom boards, and lids, to ensure they are in excellent working condition.
  • Participate in the strategic relocation of hives to various yards for honey production or to contracted farms for crop pollination services, often requiring night work.
  • Maintain scrupulous and detailed records for all apiary activities, включая hive inspections, treatment applications, colony losses, and honey production data per yard.
  • Operate and perform basic maintenance on farm machinery such as trucks, trailers, forklifts, and ATVs used for moving hives and equipment.
  • Monitor apiary locations to ensure they provide adequate forage, a clean water source, and are secure from pests, predators, and vandalism.
  • Adhere strictly to all workplace health and safety protocols, particularly when working with live insects, lifting heavy objects, and operating machinery.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis related to colony health tendencias, treatment efficacy, and honey yield forecasting.
  • Contribute to the organization's broader data strategy by providing accurate and timely field-level data.
  • Collaborate with业务单位和农场主,以将授粉需求和期望转化为明确的工程和后勤要求。
  • Participate in sprint planning, daily stand-ups, and retrospective agile ceremonies within the data and apiary teams to drive continuous improvement.
  • Assist in the construction and painting of new woodenware and asembly of frames during the off-season.
  • Contribute to a clean and organized work environment, both in the extraction facility and in workshops, in compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
  • Engage in the rendering of beeswax and the processing of other hive products, such as propolis or pollen, as required.
  • Provide support for R&D initiatives, such as testing new hive equipment, treatment methods, or bee genetics.
