🎯 Role Definition

This role requires a highly motivated and experienced Horizontal Drill Operator to become a key member of our field operations team. In this pivotal role, you will be at the forefront of our underground utility installation projects, responsible for the safe and efficient operation of horizontal directional drilling (HDD) rigs. The ideal candidate is a proactive problem-solver with a deep understanding of drilling techniques, soil conditions, and safety protocols. You will be instrumental in laying the groundwork for essential community infrastructure, including telecommunications, power, water, and gas lines. This is a hands-on position that requires technical expertise, physical stamina, and a strong commitment to quality and teamwork.

📈 Career Progression

Typical Career Path

Entry Point From:

  • Drill Locator / Tracker
  • Construction Laborer (with equipment experience)
  • Utility Worker

Advancement To:

  • Drilling Foreman / Crew Lead
  • Project Supervisor
  • Construction Superintendent

Lateral Moves:

  • Heavy Equipment Operator (Excavator, Backhoe)
  • Utility Locator Specialist

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Expertly operate horizontal directional drilling rigs (such as Vermeer or Ditch Witch) to safely install underground conduits, cables, and pipes according to project blueprints and engineering specifications.
  • Proficiently navigate and steer the drill head along a predetermined bore path, making precise adjustments to avoid existing utilities and underground obstacles.
  • Collaborate closely with the Drill Locator to monitor the drill head's position, depth, and pitch, ensuring accuracy and adherence to the planned route.
  • Select the appropriate drill heads, bits, and reamers based on the specific ground conditions (rock, clay, sand) and the diameter of the product being installed.
  • Formulate, mix, and maintain drilling fluids (bentonite, polymers) to the correct viscosity to ensure bore-hole stability, reduce friction, and effectively transport cuttings.
  • Conduct comprehensive pre-shift and post-shift inspections of the drilling rig and all associated equipment, identifying and reporting any maintenance needs or safety concerns.
  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on drilling equipment, including greasing, fluid checks, and cleaning, to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
  • Read and interpret utility maps, blueprints, and project plans to understand the scope of work and identify potential conflicts or challenges.
  • Ensure all existing utilities are properly located and exposed ("potholed") before any drilling activity commences to prevent costly and dangerous utility strikes.
  • Directly oversee and manage the pullback process, ensuring the product (conduit, cable, pipe) is pulled through the bore-hole smoothly and without damage.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work site at all times, adhering strictly to company and OSHA safety regulations.
  • Effectively operate electronic locating equipment (tracker) to map the bore path and verify the position of the drill head.
  • Manage the connection of the drill stem, downhole tooling, and product, ensuring all connections are secure and properly torqued.
  • Meticulously document daily drilling activities, including footage drilled, materials used, crew hours, and any issues encountered in a daily log or digital report.
  • Assess and adapt to changing ground conditions during the drilling process, applying advanced drilling techniques to overcome challenges like rock formations or running sand.
  • Operate vacuum excavation systems and hydro-vac trucks to safely expose underground utilities and manage drilling fluid returns.
  • Lead and participate in job site safety briefings (toolbox talks) to promote a culture of safety awareness among the crew.
  • Effectively communicate with foremen, project managers, and clients regarding project progress, timelines, and any unforeseen issues.
  • Set up and dismantle the drilling rig and associated equipment on-site, ensuring proper stabilization and traffic control measures are in place.
  • Monitor and maintain proper fluid pressure, flow, and torque on the drilling rig to optimize performance and prevent equipment failure.
  • Ensure the proper handling and environmentally-conscious disposal of used drilling fluids and soil cuttings in accordance with local regulations.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist the crew with various site-related tasks, including manual labor, site restoration, and general cleanup.
  • Provide guidance, training, and mentorship to junior crew members, such as laborers and locators, on best practices and safety procedures.
  • Assist with the loading and unloading of equipment and materials from transport vehicles.
  • Operate other pieces of heavy equipment, such as mini-excavators or skid steers, as needed to support a project.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficient operation of horizontal directional drills (e.g., Vermeer, Ditch Witch).
  • Expertise in using electronic locating and tracking systems (e.g., Digitrak Falcon or Subsite).
  • Deep knowledge of drilling fluid mixing and management for various ground conditions.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex blueprints, utility maps, and engineering drawings.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude for performing routine equipment maintenance and minor repairs.
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class A is highly preferred.
  • Experience with vacuum excavation and hydro-vac truck operation.
  • Knowledge of downhole tooling, including various bits, reamers, and pulling heads.
  • Familiarity with OSHA safety standards for construction and trenching/excavation (OSHA 10/30 certification is a plus).
  • Competency in completing daily logs, reports, and other required project documentation.

Soft Skills

  • Problem-Solving: Ability to think critically and adapt to unexpected ground conditions or technical issues.
  • Safety-Consciousness: A vigilant and unwavering commitment to maintaining a safe work environment for oneself and the entire crew.
