Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Develop and deliver progressive, structured riding lessons for children, teens and adults across walk/trot/canter and advanced levels, using clear objectives, measurable outcomes and rider-centered teaching methods.
- Create individualized training plans for horses that address fitness, biomechanics, temperament and performance goals, incorporating flatwork, pole work, gymnastic grids, jumping, and cross-country schooling as appropriate.

- Conduct regular assessments of rider skill, balance, position, aids and competition readiness and adapt lesson plans based on assessment data and progress tracking.
- Supervise daily schooling schedules, exercise plans, and ridden work ensuring progressive conditioning, periodization and appropriate workload management for each horse.
- Teach and demonstrate safe horse handling, lunging techniques, tacking up, bridling, mounting/dismounting and stable etiquette to riders and support staff.
- Manage horse turnout and fitness programs, coordinating hacking, hand-walking, treadmill or walker sessions and controlled rest days to maintain physical and mental well-being.
- Oversee tack selection, saddle fit checks and work with saddle fitters or veterinarians to resolve tack-fit issues that could affect performance or soundness.
- Monitor horse health and behavior daily, identify early signs of injury or ill-health, and coordinate with vets, farriers and physiotherapists for timely intervention.
- Implement and maintain stable health care protocols including vaccination schedules, deworming, dental care coordination and record keeping.
- Lead warming-up and cool-down routines focused on injury prevention, muscle maintenance and improving suppleness and engagement.
- Design and run mounted and unmounted clinics on topics such as dressage principles, jumping technique, cross-country preparation, and competition rules and etiquette.
- Recruit, mentor and supervise assistant instructors, working students and grooms; develop their teaching and horse-management skills and conduct regular performance reviews.
- Maintain accurate training logs for horses and riders, documenting sessions, homework, fitness markers and competition results to inform training decisions.
- Establish and enforce safety standards, emergency procedures and risk assessments for lessons, schooling sessions, shows and hacking to minimize incidents.
- Build and maintain client relationships through clear communication, progress reporting, billing transparency, and responsive scheduling; upsell packages, clinics and sales horses professionally.
- Prepare sales, loan and lease horses for marketing: evaluate prospects, create video and photo materials, draft detailed reports on temperament, current level and potential, and assist buyers at vettings and trials.
- Coordinate competition logistics including entries, transportation, stabling, equipment lists and nutritional plans for horse and rider to ensure smooth show days.
- Provide specialist schooling for problem behaviors (bolting, bucking, refusal) using positive reinforcement, desensitization and systematic retraining strategies to restore confidence and rideability.
- Deliver off-horse instruction on fitness, rider conditioning, balance work, core strengthening and sport psychology to complement in-saddle improvements.
- Keep abreast of current equestrian best practices, rules, coaching methodologies and sport science; attend professional development, certification courses and industry networking events.

- Implement biosecurity and quarantine procedures when introducing new horses, returning from events or after veterinary treatments.
