Primary Functions

  • Administer fertilizers and soil amendments according to soil test results and specific plant requirements to ensure optimal nutrition and long-term plant vigor.
  • Diligently monitor plant collections for early signs of pests and diseases, accurately reporting findings and assisting with the implementation of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies.
  • Operate a variety of powered landscape maintenance equipment, such as commercial mowers, string trimmers, edgers, leaf blowers, hedge trimmers, and chippers, in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Prepare soil for new plantings by tilling, amending with compost or other organic matter, and grading to ensure proper drainage and a healthy root environment.
  • Assist in the propagation of plants through various methods, including seed sowing, taking cuttings, and performing divisions, under the guidance of senior staff.
  • Regularly inspect, maintain, and perform minor repairs on irrigation systems, including cleaning filters, adjusting sprinkler heads, and fixing leaks to ensure efficient water use.
  • Maintain detailed daily or weekly records of horticultural activities, including planting dates, fertilization schedules, and pest control applications, for future planning and analysis.
  • Engage professionally and courteously with clients or the public, answering basic questions about the plant collections, maintenance activities, and grounds.
  • Manage the health and appearance of turf areas through a routine of mowing, aerating, overseeding, and the targeted application of treatments for weeds and pests.
  • Participate actively in large-scale seasonal grounds-keeping activities, such as comprehensive spring clean-up, extensive leaf removal in the fall, and preparing plants for winter dormancy.
  • Assist in the installation of new landscape designs, which may include planting, mulching, sod laying, and the placement of small hardscape elements like stepping stones or edging.
  • Maintain the cleanliness, safety, and order of garden paths, patios, and other hardscape features through sweeping, pressure washing, and consistent debris removal.
  • Manage inventory levels of horticultural supplies, such as soil, mulch, fertilizers, and pots, and report needs for reordering to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Support greenhouse operations by assisting with watering, potting and repotting plants, managing environmental controls, and maintaining a sterile environment to prevent disease.
  • Adhere strictly to all organizational and industry safety protocols and procedures, including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when handling tools and chemicals.
  • Contribute to on-site composting operations by collecting, turning, and managing green waste to create a valuable soil amendment for use in the gardens.
  • Perform mulching of garden beds and tree rings to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.

  • Assist in setting up and tearing down for seasonal displays, public events, or educational workshops held on the grounds.
